Water (I think) dripping from transmission.

Hi! I have a 2017 Tundra XSPX and I noticed a spot under my truck on the driveway. After further investigation I noticed what looks like water dripping from the rear part of the transmission. The liquid seems to be clear and has no smell. I’ve just never noticed this before and I haven’t driven my truck in two days. We are also having some very wet weather and humidity is in the 90% range right now. Is this normal?

The AC drain is right above the trans.

Could it be from the a/c if I haven’t driven my truck in two days though?

I would doubt it, but I also can't think of any other source of clear water from the truck. You said it's been humid and wet, maybe just dew? Just check that nothing is wet on the interior suggesting a leak maybe.

What are your outdoor temps like during the day? If it's cold enough and humid enough to get dew, then it could just be condensation from sitting.

If it was previously colder and your transmission was ambient temperature, that you are seeing is normal. Look at your dewpoint and my guess your transmission case temperature is at dewpoint or cooler.

Yeah, with that being the case I'd guess it's some condensation and dew. If you can put it in a garage that blocks some of that, then you might be able to diagnose otherwise.

Dew point is 65 degrees and it’s 66 degrees .

I don’t have a garage unfortunately.. just a covered car port.. it doesn’t seem like condensation makes the most sense but not sure why it would be just this one area

One other thought, though I doubt it, is it could just be water draining from up top on the truck that could be finding a new route if your cowl drains are plugged up. When was the last time you pulled out the "plug" at the bottom of the front fenders right in front of the door and cleaned it out? If you've got leaves or other stuff piled up in there it might be making water that would drain there find a new path.

Sounds like you have a propeller shaft coolant leak. I suggest you get a drip pan under it immediately before it melts a hole in the concrete!
JK, that said, make sure it doesn't smell like gasoline or brake fluid and you'll be fine.

Haha… yea I’m sure I’m just over reacting… it’s probably just the wet weather we are having…. It had no smell at all to me.

It’s condensation from either the normal atmospheric conditions, or it’s the condensate from the ac system. No fluids in this truck are clear, clean water.

If it’s not normally humid, you wouldn’t get a lot of condensate. Condensate occurs when the humidity is very high and the air is at maximum saturation. So rather than the moisture atomizing into air, it falls out into liquid form because the air can no longer absorb it. As a person who lives in a place that’s humid year round, you’de see this occurring pretty much daily if you’re using the air conditioner.

Yes I live in Florida so it’s humid a lot… but still never really noticed this.. and this picture was taken this morning and had not used my truck for two days so didn’t think it would be a/c related

I’m in south Louisiana, so you’re probably seeing the same humidity and mild temps we’ve had all week. Cool/moderate nights, mild rainy days. Metal holds temperature longer than the surrounding air. The metal of the motor, transmission, etc is cooling off over night, then the sun comes up and warms the air faster than the metal can warm up too, and that’s when you’ll get condensate from just normal sweating

I bought my 2020 with 50k miles and it has a funky smell coming from the AC. I let the truck idle in the driveway with the AC on for about 10 minutes and not a single drop of water hit the ground. Although every few minutes I would hear a hiss like a drop was hitting the driver side catalytic converter, but literally minutes between each drop. The carpet on the passenger side never seems to be wet, but I also don’t use my AC very often, and always turn the AC off 5 minutes before I get to my destination. So it probably doesn’t ever have a chance to get high enough to flow into the floorboard.

So if anyone is able to comment, how much water drips under your truck with the AC on? I’m also from the humid southeast like most others on this post. And I’m used to most cars having a very steady drip with a puddle forming underneath.

Mine will make a puddle in the summer. Under the transmission. I'm in a humid climate for reference.

this is interesting information. Neither of my trucks will puddle anything below. At least as of yesterday with I think 60% humidity. I might have a clog in both trucks.

60% humidity is nothing. That’s paradise lol. The condensate comes right off the refrigerant lines. There’s no drain lines to clog.

90 degrees and 60% humidity is not my idea of paradise lol. I hate living in swamp-ass Florida. I’m jealous of all the westerners on this forum. Rant over, anyways.

The evaporator inside the dash has to condensate, if all the cooling stayed outside of the cab, the A/C wouldn’t work.
