Toyota unlocked these (don’t need to provide a VIN) when they doubled the price about 2 years ago. I got them when they were VIN locked and simply found a qualifying vehicle on AutoTrader that had VIN listed. No problem.

If you have a reputable wheel painter (wet paint not powdercoat) you can also keep an eye out for a set of TRD Pro wheels (same BBS forged aluminum wheels, just painted black instead of bronze) and have them stripped and repainted. That's the route I'm in the process of going, picked up a set on FB marketplace for $1,000 and it's looking like about another $1,000 to have them repainted.

Yeah too rich for my blood! I missed a set here a year or so ago that was a great deal, hemmed and hawed too long and they got away for a good price. Then a worthless POS scumbag tried to rip me off a few months ago (also on here) so I’m looking for a lucky star it being Christmas and all ;)
Will trade machining and welding work for a set of 4! :fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed: lol

I did the same and had some in the cart from one of the online Toyota parts dealers. Waited too long on that too and the price went crazy!

Great idea.. but the prices of these have skyrocketed with the 3rd gen being released. There is one set for sale within 500 miles of me and the guy is asking $2,500.. I sold two sets last year for $1200-1500 which was fair but little do i know the price would go up.

not to mention dealers are selling the black BBS wheels for as much as the bronze ones now... $800 a wheel!

BBS says specifically not to powdercoat their wheels/they come painted. In general you're not supposed to powdercoat forged aluminum as the extra heat cycling can weaken the integrity of the wheels. Exactly how much it weakens them is up for debate/a hot topic on many a forum. I've read people claiming to be metallurgists say not to do it, but then have heard multiple powder coaters say it's fine. I spoke to a shop near me that's a very reputable powder coater and he said there's a local Porsche track club that exclusively uses his shop for powdercoating, and he's done thousands of forged BBS wheels without issue. Ultimately it would probably be fine but I'm not willing to risk it lol

Oh yeah I remember reading about that now, forgot all about it. I’m sure the powder coat shops around here could care less and it’s probably a liability release for the wheel manufacturers more than anything. I wonder how hot a powder coat oven really gets? If it’s a few hundred degrees I would think that wouldn’t make much of an impact especially since forged race wheels get hot on summer days and the heat cycling from braking might be a bigger deal than a low and slow regulated curing oven. But that’s just a guess!

@Snert are they using some sort of hardener and are you getting them clear coated? Curious if anyone has the paint code for the oem bronze?

I think powder coating is sort of like cooking in that you can do it hotter for a shorter amount of time or cooler for a longer amount of time, I’ve seen charts that show the temps and times and they’re all 300-400 degrees or so for a half hour give or take. The OEM BBS forged ones are painted, at least as far as I know and I think that’s true of all BBS wheels. I couldn’t track down an exact paint code but over on the ih8mud forum here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/heritage-bronze-color-code.1218119/

somebody said that the paint code Prospector 8-2-7120-00 is a close match. I haven’t settled on what I’m going to do yet so I didn’t ask the guy I talked to super in depth about their process etc. but I’d hope they do a 2k system or similar, primer, color, and clear.

You’ve got a set of the black pro/bbs ones? If so and you end up getting them painted or powdered I’d love to see how they turn out, and likewise after the holidays and when I decide on what to do with mine I’ll post em
