What is the truth about tires from was mart. Rejects? Seconds? Lower quality? Or just a good deal.

I was told they are seconds but i find that hard to relive due to the importance of tires. To many lawyers out there that that would love to have a piece of Wal Mart for selling a sub par tire.

They may be blems (having blemishes).

On a tangent, a pal of mine was produce manager at Denver's highest revenue King's Super. Said that Wal Mart would buy the produce that wasn't up to snuff. Same with dairy that was near the sell by date. The only thing I'll buy from Wal Mart is facial tissue and toilet paper.

I had a 2002 Tundra that I bought used in 2007. It had Michelin tires on it, but they didn't handle very well in the rain and were quite worn. I tried to find this particular model at Discount Tire and The Tire Rack to no avail. Finally found the model at Michelin's web site as a brand sold only through WalMart stores. I decided to replace them with Michelin LTX MS tires instead. While I agree they are not inferior or seconds, I do believe they have specific models only WalMart sells.

That's weird. My local Super Walmart has way better fruits and veggies than my local King Sooper although I rarely shop at either one. >>>>Albertson's and Safeway.
I think Walmart would have a huge problem selling tire 2nds/blemished as the real deal. The tire thing sounds like an urban legend to me.

Wal Mart does have some tires made just for them. I can't remember the name but they sell a Goodyear tire that is a version of the Duratrac. Several guys on the Tacoma forum run them and seem to like. Just looked up and the Wal Mart version is Wrangler Authority.

I've seen decent tires at my local super Walmart. Stay from Walmart truck batteries...for another thread.

    Everything. Literally.
    It’s the wal mart stigma.
Its not like a major tire manufacturer makes a tire and then says “hey, let’s make a shittier version of this tire for wal mart to distribute”.
    They’re all the same.

Exactly that used to happen with electronics. Sears, Montgomery Wards, Kmart and the like would send out bids to manufacturers for less expensive gizmos. But the stores got to put their name on them. Auto manufactures go to tire companies and ask them to make lesser cost tires they can put on their vehicles to save a few bucks. That's why they usually suck. Look at the rubbish that comes on the Tundras. They'll also ask for very high spec tires for their halo vehicles, Bugatti does it.

What are you referring to? Retreads, shitty brands, or just cheaper good brands?

If it’s retreads, good luck... Those are junk. Seen too many of them get destroyed out while wheeling to ever consider them, regardless of the cost. Plus, my life is worth more for a tire to explode on an old carcass.

If it’s just a better deal of a name brand tire, why not? I’m sure there are plenty of folks who have have bought tires at Walmart and had them installed by imbeciles, but those people are everywhere. If you get a name brand for cheaper and a good install, I’m all for it. I cross-reference Walmart on prices semi-regularly and I see no harm in it.

It's pretty much urban legend that retreads are dangerous. This has been already discussed on the forum in the past. Most semi's and believe it or not, commercial and "passenger" jets run on retreads. Retreading tech has come a long ways over the years. http://www.retreadtire.org/

Dang..Monkey Wards. The good old days. The now defunct chain Western Auto also had a lot of rebranded products like Wards and Sears. Every now and then there is a good product. The RoadHandler Touring tire that was made to spec for Sears back in the day. I remember going with my Dad to Sears in the mid 60's to get RoadHandlers for our station wagon. Sears sold millions of RoadHandlers over the years. The RoadHandler went away for a few years but is back with a 100,000 mile warranty for passenger car tire! Junk tires don't come with a 100,000 mile warranty. I think the truck LT warranty is 40K. Oh.....made by Hankook now and branded Hankook. No Sears brand on it anymore.

While I am sure that your statement stands true in those 2 fields, considering they are probably very regulated, I disagree about the car and light truck market. I’ve personally seen Chinese retreads separate from the carcass and chunk out while under hard use Offroad on multiple occasions. That doesn’t mean all retreads are bad, but it sure isn’t an urban myth with the junk that’s available on eBay.

I’m sure Walmart would be wise enough to carry fairly decent stuff to avoid a lawsuit and ensure that QC is in place, but it’s still scary as to what’s sold online and what people pay for to save a couple bucks.

Actually the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration/DOT that regulates commercial tire retreads also regulates passenger and LT retreads with the same standards. It's the old adage. You get what you pay for. No reason to by cheap Chinese retreads. Not even sure if they would pass muster to even be sold here legally. There are many very good American re-treaders. This one for instance....https://www.treadwright.com/

Good info, didn’t know this. My assumption was they they loopholed regulation by selling through online vendors. I’ve heard of the guys you linked, no experience with them though. The couple tires I’ve seen destroy themselves were mispelled versions of big name tire companies.

TreadWrights are pretty good especially if you want a 2nd set of M/T tires to use strictly off road for example. Can save a lot of money. They sell remold and blemishes too.

I have purchased plenty of tires at Sams Club/Walmart. I have never had an issues with quality. Now I find a Walmart that is next to a Discount tire and have bidding wars. Discount will not be underbid, and they don’t make me disconnect my trailers to rotate and balance my tires.

Back in the day, I would buy 37” MTRs for 160-170 each on a 15” wheel at Sams Club.
Now I purchase 40” race compound tires from 550-800.00 each. I could only wish Walmart would sell those tires.

Things I purchase at Walmart/Sams Club:
    - Razors.
    - TP
    - Mobil 1 motor oil/filters. Good luck finding a better price on either.
    - Automotive fluids: Brake, radiator, windshield wiper fluid, etc.
    - Movies. Tuesday’s new releases come out and they are super cheap.
    - Bullets and gun cleaning supplies.
