    Greetings everybody,

I'm considering buying a used Tundra, but I've always bought new and never bought a truck before... What should I be looking at in, say, a 2007-2013 Tundra when I'm looking at used ones on a lot?... What is considered too-high mileage? I work from home so don't commute in it, but it will be my only vehicle. For the most part, this will be a hauling vehicle, i know I'll never take it close to max capability, but I'd like a good life out of it...

For reference, one I'm considering is this 2007 SR5...

FYI, a used tundra, like this one is being considered as a budget option against the likes of a new 2018 Tacoma sr5/trd. Attractive option if it's a practical choice.

    Any and all thoughts welcome!

Welcome from CO!. That Blue 07 is quite nice. It appears to have been well taken care of. 140K isn't crazy high miles and I think the asking price is fair too. Take test drive! I like my 07. No major issues. I think the build quality is pretty darn good for a first year new generation truck. I like the 07 model year Tundra. The year Toyota "woke" the Big Three truck makers!

The truck you’re considering has the same drivetrain as the 1 million mile Tundra.

I no longer own a Tundra, but suggest them a lot to people just like you. These trucks are really the only choice in the 1/2 ton trucks for me.
    Research the following:
-AIP failures (just buy the bypass kit and never worry about it again), and you can do this yourself.
-Starter location on the 4.7L trucks is an interesting location...
-4.7L motor has a timing belt, so remember that is a required service every 90k miles (if I remember correctly). Make sure this was done before you purchase this vehicle.

The drivetrain in these trucks are pretty solid. We rarely hear of transmission failures. I can honestly say I have never heard of the rear axle having issues. Motor failures are almost never heard of as well.

I purchased my 2007 last September, it had 270,000 miles on it at the time.
I also work from home, and it's my daily driver now.

It looks like a solid truck. I recently purchased an 07 with 130K miles that I am very happy with. I am really amazed of the quality and how well it has held up. I am also always amazed of their asking prices. That price seems a bit high but we are in different market area, I am in Houston. It is also 4x4 so it is worth more. Do your research on value; NADA and Kelly Blue Book. It may be fair in your area. Also use CarFax, dealer should be able to provide. If not a CarFax subscription is worth piece of mind.
As mentioned the 4.7 has a timing belt, not a chain. A pricey maintenance item, and although it should have been changed already once, it my be hard to verify. The 5.7 seems to get more Kudos with a bit more power.

    Good Luck!

Yes, and the 100 extra horsepower and all of the torque the 5.7L produces is appreciated by most owners.

Great responses, thanks for the detail! The AIP failure sounds like a pain, would that and the timing belt replacement both be on the service record?

Also, I've heard of 'frame rot' with regard to some of the older Tacomas (rust on the rustable frame components?). Is this a thing that applies to Tacomas only, Tundras as well, trucks in general? Is a visual inspection by my mark one eyeball sufficient to identify any problems like that?

Those things could be in the service records or CarFax if done at Dealership or shop that reports. If done elsewhere, may not be reported.

Frame rust: not familiar but would think you could get a "one eye" visual to get an idea. Any concerns maybe get a second opinion.

Also, It is hard to tell in pics but if that is a drop in bed liner, you may want to inspect underneath especially back towards the cab for rust. Not all, but there have been issues with drop ins and bed rust. If spray in, disregard.

Just saw in ad, 188 days - selling slowly, would definitely make a lower offer.

Is rust a problem in WA?

Make arrangements to take it on an extended test drive on different surfaces with the sound system OFF. I also recommend that you try and find a rather bumpy stretch of road that will better test the suspension & brakes... it's also a good method to find hidden rattles and other noises.

Most retailers are not obligated to reveal or confirm known problems, so put $5.00 of gas in it and get your money's worth. Have your passenger take notes of your impressions, use everything to negotiate a better deal. Good luck.
