Upgrading suspension on a 2021 Platinum

    So I've been looking deeply into upgrading my suspension.

    I like how the stock tundra sits. I don't think I want to lift it much more. I just bought brand new TA KO2s for the stock platinum 20 inch wheels so I'm not looking to replace my wheels and tires anytime soon....but the suspension is a different story.

    I test drove a Pro when I went looking. The guy wouldn't budge on price (okay I get it, its a Pro) but once I saw the 2021 Platinum, all black, with that diamond stitched leather and bells and whistles...I was hooked, and forgot about the pro.

    But I want a suspension like a pro. Upgrading the interior of a Pro to a platinum sounded like alot! cooled seats, folding mirrors, etc...

    But suspension wise...I want something fun and with longevity.

    I mainly tow my camper with this and day to day drive it. Rarely offroading it, and I want to fit it in the garages downtown, so I dont want to go big.

    I was looking at a TRD Pro suspension (FOX shocks); King; or FOX but want to keep my suspension in similar height (I know the TRD pro suspension sits 2 inches higher and I'm okay with that)

    Any advice? Especially longevity of these products? I want to replace the suspension 120k miles later (exaggerating but you know what I mean)

    Money isn't really an option, but if I get better longevity bang for my buck with King instead of the TRD Pro FOX suspension, I'd go with them

    You wanted a pro so you'll probably just be second guessing everything else if you went another direction.

    That said I think you can put together a fox setup with more bang for the buck without the TRD logo's on it

    They’re actually all looking to be around 3k. Except the TRD Pro suspension does not have the feature to tune on the fly where king and fox have adjusters at that price.

    maybe I’ll look around for the best deal.

    Check out Tundradude34 on youtube , he installed a pro suspension on his Platinum. I went with a cheep 4 inch so i could fit my 35s without chopping and it still fits in all the parking ramps.

    If you want the pro ride quality with better reliability I'd go with a Teraflex Falcon kit. I've driven many TRD pros for work and I have yet to find anything that feels closer to the stock Pro suspension.

    I couldn't stand how my Platinum drove with the stock POS Hitachi shocks, ton of guys around here run Bilstein 6112/5160 combo so I put those in(on the lowest setting) before the 1st oil change.
    After going down the whole shock rebuilding, bushing and heim joint replacement rabbit hole with my last truck I wanted something simple and zero maintenance.

    What ever your decision its gonna be way better than whats in there now.

    So more research...I'm leaning towards king with adjusters. The TRD Pro FOX shocks are beautiful, but no adjustment. I don't know if it would help but I'd really like to make the truck stiffer when I'm towing my camper.

    I've been looking, some place called filthy motorsports online? Looks like I can get King 2.5 adjustable front and rear shocks....AND....free of charge a 650lb king spring upgrade. 700lb is 120 extra. 2.5 front and rear with adjusters and a 650lb spring is $2735.

    Thoughts? I'm not doing anymore lift than the shocks straight out of the box. Maybe in the future but def not right now. I like how the stock wheels sit with the all terrain tires

    If you can afford em then go for it. You’ll probably end up putting the adjusters on the softest setting and never moving them lol but at least you have the option.

    Well affording them is one thing, but is it worth adjusting them during tow to make my ride better? I went 10 places last year with my travel trailer. I'd like to do cross country trips this year. I just want longevity, reliability, and not to upgrade these shocks for 100k miles

    It sounds like your on the right track. You’ll have a very highly reputable brand of equipment with the features you want. Plus, you get to tell people you have Kings. I’m a huge fan of the TRD rear sway bar too. If you look into that, you’ll find that it will do you a world of good shoring up the balance of the truck. That should help immensely with towing characteristics too.

    If you just want to adjust while towing then maybe you don’t need the adjusters up front?

    I have the same concerns as you, not having to dick with them all the time, longevity, towing etc and I’m looking more towards the falcons or a dobinsons setup with a new leaf pack.

    Kings and fox and ads are all cool but probably more shock than you’ll use and they will all have to be rebuilt at some point. Even the falcons will have to be rebuilt. I was all set to get a high end set but the thought of them looking like ass in a year or two from rust has me looking at other configs.

    I have a rear sway bar. Came with the truck. I know rebuilding them is going to be in my future no matter what brand I get. If I have to change the springs and shocks out stock around the same time, then it’s just maintenance in my mind.

    I know kings a nice brand. Wouldn’t brag having them. And maybe they are more shocks than I need. Kinda hoping someone is reading this with TRD Pro takeoffs they’re trying to get rid of lol.

    it’s a big purchase. I heard ADS last longer with all the salt and corrosion I’m looking at living in Lexington KY. But so far those kings at that price were the cheapest.

    I just installed the TRD Pro suspension on my 2016 1794 CM. I can say without a doubt it made a big improvement in the ride vs. stock, but it was pricey. If it's just added stiffness for towing, wouldn't air bags or an adjustable rear suspension be on your radar? Seems you just need a good set of coil-overs in the front, a good set of shocks in the rear, and additional lift help when towing. Personally, I wouldn't want to have to adjust shocks every time I tow.

    Yea. I've been talking to a local shop and they are adamant I'll never use a Fox 2.5 or King 2.5 to the potential. Since I'm not wanting to lift much at all, they're suggesting a FOX 2.0 throughout or Billstein 5100 throughout.

    I know there's a wealth of suspension knowledge on this website, but I would also recommend you talk with Wheelers Off-Road. Those guys have helped me several times and they carry a lot of various lift packages.

    You could go with kings/fox non adjustable up front (with or without resi's you probably don't need them), and get the clickers for the rear so you can tighten up for towing. With the fox you could do 2.5 up front with 2.0 rr's in the rear with the dsc.

    If the tow rating is less, then it's the first time I've heard about that. The TRD Pro shocks are larger with valving/reserviors and I think have 2" more length/extension than stock, so compared with stock shocks it seems they would be far superior. It seems the OEM leaf springs would have more to do with the tow rating anyhow, and I think these parts are the same on all 3rd gen. Tundras...but then again, I'm no expert.

    The tow rating has nothing to do with the shocks on the back, it’s about added weight for options etc.

    So I went with adjusters for the rear for when I tow. 2.0 in the front and 2.0 with reservoirs and adjusters in the rear.

    $1700 shipped and taxes from 4WP. Not bad.

    I’m still considering those but the 2.5 non res fronts with the 2.0 adjuster rear.

    Since I will probably never race this thing in the desert, and literally only tow my camper, I didn’t see the need of going 2.5. I hope I get many years out of these things. Although I heard refinishing these were pretty cheap. Who knows. Maybe in 10 years I’ll put some 3.0 on for fun lol

    Another question for y’all.

    since I’m planning on towing my camper, which is only around 4000lbs loaded, should I consider adding a leaf spring to the truck? Any other recommendations for the people who have upgraded the suspension would be awesome.

    Maybe look into rear airbags. I know a lot of people have used those with great success.
