Being the owner of a 2004 Tundra, I started seriously shopping yesterday for a new SR5. Since I average 20 years on my vehicles, I kind of want what I want, including color. Boy was I disappointed in the selection. Just looking for some updated commentary on the posts below. Would wait it out, but need some additional tow capacity.

What are your exact wants? Plug em into autotrader and start with a small search radius. Expand out as needed. You may want a combination that isn’t common or available. These are only made in limited configurations. And many of the available “features” or options are actually port or dealer installed.

And another forum member who works at Toyota: "I don't have a count of all sold but know 1 other dealer has had the same amount to repair. Like I said, this is only the beginning, the Era of the dependable 5.7 is over." He is talking about avalanche of broken engines that, in his opinion, only starts to roll. https://www.tundras.com/threads/2022-tundra-engine-failure.125870/page-8#post-3353184

No one data point is inclusive or exclusive. They are all just single data points. Pile em all up together and the answer becomes slowly more and more accurate.

Toyota of Denton TX has good selecrion and pricing once you start working with them. Nearly 4k off MSRP is advertised then they will give you a other couple thousand depending on the trim.

Even if some of us want to trade our tundras, we don't have many options... It'll all result in lots of money lost

My local dealer said that they are sitting on Tundras now and need to move them...not sure how low they are going on prices, but it seems to indicate supply/demand has tipped a bit compared to where it was at.

There is a dealer in PA that's doing $5k to $9k off MSRP right now.

My experience this past summer when I upgraded from my 2006 DoubleCab and purchased my SR5 Crewmax 4WD Sport was very fluid. I searched up and down east coast and there were only a few dealers willing to do MSRP on SR5 or Limited trims. The higher trims like platinum, 1794, capstone had sizable discounts ($6-7K) but they had tons of equipment/chrome I didn't want/need.

I found the best information on the Toyota website using the inventory search features. I knew I would have to act quick when I found the truck I wanted because of three things I observed for the 2 months I was just browsing/gauging the market.

    1) Lots of SR5 and Limiteds were already shown as sold on the Toyota website before even being shipped. Which I interpreted as high demand for trucks in the sub-$62K price range

    2) Dealers still doing tricks where the truck is advertised for below MSRP, but when you inquire about OTD there's tons of BS dealer add-ons that are mandatory for you to purchase. Quickly pushing the price past MSRP and eliminating whatever savings advertised.

    3) 90% of the trucks I was interested in (Sport 4WD with the softex, advanced tech, sound, and panoramic cams) only lasted 3-7 days on the dealer lots before being sold. No dealer was willing to negotiate anything lower than MSRP. In fact, I never even got a call back after inquiring about a truck, so I know they had no shortage of buyers in the queue. Dealers basically said take it or leave it.

I completed my purchase finding a truck that was in build phase and allocated to a dealer in Virginia, placed a deposit, and waited. I used Toyota Financial to get the $750 military rebate off the MSRP and then just paid off the note at the end of the week. The finance manager was not happy about that when I picked up my plates. Guess they don't get their kickback on the finance charge when that happens.

You can search inventory on Toyota's website for local dealers. I tried that and many dealers at the time werent moving easily if at all on MSRP or above. I ended up connecting with a sales manager for Greensburg Toyota in PA. (on this forum) Ended up getting a 1794 edition thats been great so far. It was a few grand under MSRP and I am happy. (originally I wanted blueprint in a limited or so)
I was flexible and got a really nice ride for not too much more at all. Dealership experience was great but the 7 hour drive each way was crappy.

In addition to this....my opinion, and my opinion only..... I'd personally take anything I did hear from 'Toyota' or a 'Toyota Representative' with a grain of salt as it would not be in their best interest to run around saying anything negative.

Please dont mind me saying below -- but again this is coming from a highly credible source.

I was having a candid conversation with one of my close friends - who works for Ford product development. We were talking about how Toyota went from V8 to V6 on Tundra and the niggles with new gen models have niggles and how they affect the sales.
He responded - "Manufacturers spend a ton of money in the R&D and then they launch a product. The decisions like going from V8 to V6 turbo - doesn't mean that they are offering inferior products. They bigger problem they face today are the hearsay negative experiences that are shared on online platforms and amplified 100 times by people repeating them. "
"Its normal to see some minor issues on the first production year, it generally to do with minor design glitches which are rectified"

I did check with my local dealer on the engine issue and he hasnt seen any so far. So while I do know that some of us have faced this problem - I dont think its as widespread.

In addition to what @ryanwgregg already corrected you on - you keep putting the decimal in the wrong place for the failure rate. Imagine the meltdown you’d endure if I posted everywhere the failure rate was 5%?

I also wonder... Not particularly in your case... But

If a random person asks their service advisor if they've seen this major issue of new Tundras engine failing...

A smart thing to say for a service advisor is - "Nop, never seen it, all is good here."

They work for Toyota so it's in their best interest not to badmouth Toyota quality.

My understanding is we have less than 1% of the 3rd gen population as members but we are almost 3% to 1000 documented failures not including all the fb, Reddit, and other sources showing an engine failure that were posted but not included in the official forum count as they only count failures of forum members.

Toyota knows exactly how many short blocks have been ordered - if it was such a low number why don’t they come out and lay down the numbers like they did in 2007?

I agree with you and hence as someone stated on the thread - I too will take something from Toyota representative with a grain of salt.

That said - to my earlier point - In todays age of mis-information, It is common for someone to share an issue and lot of naysayers latching out it to it and soon we see barrage of comments on how un-reliable product X is.
Point in case - I saw how someone's Truck died within weeks of taking delivery and getting anxious about my purchase. Later it came out that particular truck went through some deep water and was probably the case of hydro locking.

I didn’t spend the money to just swap out stuff.
Forums for vehicles are for fucking nerds that don't spend enough time driving on grass and for people that are too lazy or not smart enough to look at the Table of Contents in the manual.

Also, TRD alone is not a trim, but it is part of the TRD Sport and TRD Off Road trims on other Toyota vehicles. The Tundra is the odd duck on that one. Go look at Tacomas, 4Runners, RAV4 and even the Camry.

And TRD Pro is 100% a trim. On many Toyotas. But yes, TRD alone, is not a trim. It’s a specialty division for Toyotas go fast folks. Like SVT.

That's got options and the 6 cylinder. You can get the 4 banger base for less.

50% more than historically reasonable is about the going rate these days. I’ve got a plan though. Y’all stop paying so much for new and used cars and they’ll stop being able to charge it.

    2023 Tundra Platinum 4x4 Crewmax
the only thing I wanted to wait for besides the exact truck I wanted was no more than MSRP. MSRP was the max I was willing to pay and I was comfortable with that given the amount of my trade which was paid off and the business write offs.

anything over MSRP is where the real stupid is, but I get if you can wait and go under MSRP if a couple grand is more important, everyone is in different situations.
