Turbo dreaming on a rubber band budget.

Forgive me if this has been covered previously, my search yielded nothing.

I made the mistake of wandering into Amazon's turbo kit aisle and was shocked at the low prices of the kits. So low that I believe it may be vaporware or its equivalent. I can not believe there isn't a hook in there somewhere.

Are there such a thing as a workable turbo for these 1st gen Tundras and at what price point?

Would one be better off going with a supercharger instead?

Anyone like to point me in the direction of a tutorial or such that explains this technology to a layman like myself?

So DirtyDeeds is one of the resident performance gurus, beyond just exhaust systems? Good to know. BUT, turbo or not, my truck bed stays where it is, as it is!

My son, who got me started on this performance thing, also says supercharger and spoke of a lot of part failure issues with aftermarket turbos - can anyone address this?

I am not one to complain about too much info, even when one has to weed their way through it to make sense, so by all means if anyone has any comment to add I will be receptive to hearing it, pro or con. It's with issues like this that the real strength of this forum shows up, that and building the confidence of members striking out on their own in the DIY world where we take care of, and pride in, our Tundras and this informal brotherhood we belong to. Eh, corny, I know. But true in any case.

 

I am getting a used TRD supercharger. Toyota used to sell our trucks with super chargers and has since discontinued the program. I found a wrecked 2013 that was supercharged and I’m basically piecing it together. Not something you want to do, but as I have the time and know how I am doing it. If you are serious about supercharging it usually will cost anywhere from 6-8 thousand depending on the kit. Magnisson superchargers used to make the TRD supercharger and when Toyota Discontinued them, magnisson essentially just changed the logo on the supercharger and now offers the same kit but aftermarket.

a supercharger will lower your truck lifespan. Especially if your heavy in the foot area. It’s all a trade off in what you want. I had a vision for the truck and I’m carrying through but for most it’s not worth it.

The supercharger brings the HP to around 550.

Dirty deeds is a vendor here and does performance items. Exhaust tuning supercharger brakes etc... he also had a twin turbo first gen if I’m not mistaken so I tagged him since that was essentially your original question.

 

Been there done that on both turbos and superchargers. They can both be reliable. They can both not be. People that buy cheap crap end up with cheap crap. Cheap crap is unreliable as hell. Heck expensive stuff is sometimes unreliable.

I had a procharger kit on my cobra that would blow apart intake piping constantly. Upgrading everything to v-bands and a big blow off valve probably cost what your cheap turbo kit on Amazon will cost.

Cheap, reliable, powerful. Pick two.

 

What??? Congrats man! I keep saying I'm going to do it, but it keeps getting pushed back. I'm hoping to get one in maybe the next 6-8 months, but we'll see. Keep me posted.

 

Thank You! after many late nights loading the supercharger into the cart, and then not pulling the trigger I am finally doing it!! Planning on installing myself so I'm sure there will be a build thread!

 

PS OP: Also look into tuning your truck. With exhaust, Intake, and tune you can get some pretty good gains. Long tube headers are one of the best mods but not legal in Commie-fornia.

Nice! I've added the Magnuson to my cart countless times too. Hoping over the next few months I can put enough away to get closer, then the rest goes on the card which I hate doing. I wish we could do a group buy on the Magnuson to save a bit off the cost.

Oh, you mean financial insolvency. I figured around 2 grand on the top end, how naive of me to think a rubber band powered budget could upgrade so easily. Now I see the appeal of Amazon's $99 turbo kits, despite the unknown but expected enormous installation costs. I'll be following your build but, guys, I'm not able to step in your shoes and pull such green fodder from my wallet. I'll just have to settle for dreaming about it then.

What about time shares? Owners north and south - the southern owners get in the winter and the northern owners in the summer? I know, stupid idea. But is it?

 

Bully Dog Tuner, Dirty Deeds Exhaust and Intake. That will run you about 2000 and net you around 35 HP. You will feel the difference for sure...

So the gist of it is the 1st gen (and best gen) doesn't do superchargers? Matters not, at $6K to $8K, neither does this old man. I will be looking further at the Bully Dog Tuner at DirtyDeeds after my son explained what it was and what it did. Frankly, it is at his urging that I am even thinking it terms of upping the performance. Besides, I wasn't aware that it shortened the engines lifespan so much - a deal breaker for me. Even adding a turbo is now questionable for me. I would rather put the larger sum of money into the suspension than eek out a little more performance that may cause irreparable harm to the engine.
A can of worms or pandora's box - remains to be seen after the bodies are removed, counted, and the winner decided. And that Panda's got some good moves; is he a 1st gen Panda?

There is a 4.7L TRD supercharger but it was discontinued long before TRD discontinued the others and as far.as I know, Magnuson has not continued making the 4.7L supercharger, like it has for the 3.4, 4.0 and 5.7. They are very rare but sometimes pop up for sale on ebay. The story I always hear is that TRD discontinued the 4.7L supercharger because it was blowing rods apart. But also because in 05 the vvti version of the 4.7 with 5 speed auto was introduced and gave a decent HP bump. Not nearly as much as the supercharger had though. I would definately pick the brains of our few first gen owners who have superchargers or those who have turbos. As stated before Dirty Deeds is a good place to start. In the meantime you can get some decent extra HP from long tube headers with a full dual exhaust and dirty deeds industries 12 hole 250cc fuel injectors.

 

@OR18TRD ...Touché, fearless Panda. Eyes wide open and I missed the obvious. As big and plodding as those cumbersome '18s are, I should have caught it. I simply wasn't expecting a turd gen on our block without an escort.

 

I'll put my son, nicknamed Moondog, on this here trail, after all, boosting the performance is his idea, and since my plan is to leave Trixie to him when I take my last big trip, he should underwrite any such upgrade.

Thanks for the info, the laughs, and the digs, but I'm going to beg off this thread that I started. If I should win the lottery that I never play, or my property sells for more than what I have it listed for, then I may revisit this thread, but for now, I no longer own it.

Dude in all honesty, just leave it be. In my experience, unless your willing to deal with the compromises in drivability, reliability, or whatever gets affected, it just ain’t worth it.
