    FRIDAY NIGHT FOLLIES:
    SHITBOX EDITION

What was the worst vehicle you've ever owned?

Mine came early on as only the second one I've ever owned. As a young guy starting out with a new job as a carpenter, I really needed to own a truck. Ran across this really sweet and well maintained 79 F-250 Lariat. Clean, and with a big 400 C.I. power plant in it, this was definitely the truck for me I told myself. I realized my huge mistake a few Months later after loading the bed with maybe 1500 lbs. of stripped roofing shingles. When I started to pull away to head to the dump it felt like I had the emergency brake on, but it wasn't, I had purchased a 169 HP turd. :anonymous:

Speak now, or forever hold your peace.

That's an easy one, it was my first car!!!

In order to avoid driving the previously depicted Plymouth Arrow, I saved up and bought my own vehicle when I turned 16....

1978 Formula Firebird (pic below is definitely not mine)
    images_a1510a7bf4f2a4a272cc09c5f67a322a9bf62e4f.jpg

400cid gas sucking, gutless, POS

Bought it from an uncle and the thing ended up being junk from almost day one. It did spend a few Wednesday nights at the Sacramento Raceway, and I can confirm was not capable of breaking a 17 second 1/4 mile (at least in stock trim)....

But, I was proud of it; it was my first car, and I paid for it on my own. Kept it for almost 2 years while saving up enough money for a down payment on a new 5.0 Mustang :D

 Cheers folks and have a great weekend!!!!!

I've had pretty good luck with cars. Probably the worst was the 1st one I was in when it got totalled.

1985 Subaru XT Turbo 4wd. It had all the 80s charm...brown checkered velour interior, green digital dash, charming orange paint. The transmission was not up to the task of repeated neutral drops. It did have pneumatic suspension lift and 4wd, and would follow most Toyota's pretty far into the woods though. Looked like this with aluminum rims.

    Screenshot_20230330_080830_Brave.jpg

Or...my grandmothers 89 Olds Cutlass Ceira. It was just an old person's car. Great dependable 2.8 that was surprisingly quick though. Looked exactly like this.

I wouldn't feel too bad about that purchase, they were very cool for that era. You just picked the wrong color and trim.

My second car…only because my dad wrecked my first car when I was away at college (first one was an ‘87 Subaru GL hatchback 2-door that I drove the shit out of).

    1988 Plymouth Horizon
(Internet picture, but basically this color)
    upload_2023-3-31_21-15-5.jpg

Bought it in central Wisconsin in 1996 from some seedy used dealer that my grandpa knew and got me a “deal” through. Had to take a greyhound bus 2-1/2 hours from Milwaukee to pick it up. It had a crappy cassette player and was gutless as fuck.

I pissed away most of my summer earnings putting a pioneer CD player radio with remote 6-disc CD changer in the “trunk” and a pair of 6x9 speakers in standalone boxes that I could position either on top of the rear cover (talk about a missile in a car accident) or put in the sides of the trunk. Also dropped a ton of cash into a Yakima rack, snowboard rack, and roof basket for it.

It had vacuum leak issues from day one that I never could chase down. It drove me from Milwaukee to North Idaho the first summer, made it through the next school year in Milwaukee (and all over Wisconsin and Illinois), and back out to Portland the next summer. At the end of that second summer, driving back from Portland, I was about 15 miles from home in N. Idaho when I had an overhead powerline that was caught by a semi coming the other direction snap and whip across the hood and front of the car. It ripped a gash across the passenger fender, up over the hood, and down the driver door…about 10” higher and it would have whipped through the windshield and probably decapitated me and my buddy riding back with me.

We survived that, a few days in N. Idaho, and then headed back to WI. Along the way, the thing decided it would randomly stop accelerating above 50mph and start doing all sorts of weird shit. We limped it back to Milwaukee and I parked it outside our apartment. I think I drove it four times after that…

We were able to hunt down the cause of the overhead power line being low enough to be hit by the semi truck - a recent construction project near by on the rail line had bumped an intermediate pole and broken the line off that pole mount. The piece that had ripped the gouges across my fender, hood, and door was actually the clamp bracket that was originally attached to that middle pole - it was like an grapple hook on the end of the wire. After a few months back and fourth, they paid me hush money not to sue them for near decapitation. By then, it was winter in Milwaukee (with alternate street parking for snow plows to clear the roads) and I had amassed a decent number of parking tickets. I found a wrecking yard that would take it and pay me $100 for it…conveniently the exact amount I owed in parking tickets.

That is the last “domestic” vehicle I’ve ever owned.

Took my daughters bf out. He’s never done donuts. Had him drive, and placed into drift mode. He’s hooked. Of course, our youngest (9) is obsessed too

Mines are still to young for that, but they were in the womb wheeling! Even now they always fall asleep on the trail.

Funny enough. I placed my daughter through “top cop driving” school. Granted, I had given her a lot of lessons before hand. She aced every driving course. The last one “who taught her to drive? She drives as great as us retired cops”

Oldest is 16 still on permit. In CO, you can’t have ur DL until one year post permit / 17 or something. Growing up, I only had to have my permit 6 months

Whelp, my base model 1991 Chevy Caviler was a shit box…but it was basically built as one. Not the car’s fault. Honestly, it never had a mechanical/warranty issue for the three years I owned it. So I’ll give it a pass.

That means my 2016 F150 gets the shitbox crown.

Well, you guys started too late for me but I'll add in my submission now. I've been incredibly fortunate as far as reliability goes with all my vehicles so the shitbox award goes to that Mazda b4000 that I rolled (and posted pictures of in here a while back) and continued to drive after rolling it. It wins the award because even though mechanically it was sound, visually it was an absolute mess. To get it roadworthy again we stuck a cherry picker in the cab with the arm tucked all the way in for the most lifting capacity and jacked it up until the roof popped roughly back into place. Then we "massaged" the roof with a sledgehammer to get it so it would accept a new windshield. Then when the windshield process was 95% over my dog at the time jumped in the cab and hit a board that was sitting on the seat and cracked the new windshield. The front right fender was moderately dented, the roof looked like the Rocky mountains, the entire left side from front to back was all crunched up. It had rope shoved in behind the door seals to help fill in the gap. You still heard and felt a little wind and if it rained really hard you would get a few drops on you. Also because of rust both rear fenders would flap in the wind at highway speeds. To top it all off I painted on crooked racing stripes on the hood and my own decals on the tailgate that included a skull and something else that I don't even remember lol. I actually really miss that truck.

Also, work was canceled again today because of weather and this time it was justified. Of course they waited way too damn long to cancel. I already made it to the work parking lot where there was a stuck semi blocking the entrance and my coworkers were the ones that told me it was canceled. I think this is the worst I've ever seen the town roads in my 27 years of living here. I would like one order of spring now please.

Well this just goes to show how much snow we got. I got stuck in the city on a side road. First time I've been stuck during winter in a long time and in the city no less. Believe it or not, crawl control (with a bunch of shoveling) got me out.

My dad loved his 1974 Firebird, though, as you say, 190 HP from a 400 CI V8 was pretty pathetic and it was slower than his dad's Olds Delta 88.

After that one, he bought a 1980 Firebird and didn't like it at all.

To date, I haven't owned a bad vehicle.

First car was a 1998 Civic LX ("Si" in Canada) coupe. When I first bought it, it turns out the speedo was reading intermittently so the ~100k mile odometer reading was probably a bit low but had no issues with it after getting that replaced. Got rear ended by a drunk driver on the way home on a snowy night. Glued the bumper back together and kept driving it for a few months then sold it to my brother so he could take a summer job 200 miles away. I had just graduated from university at that point so I went looking for a new car that was as similar as I could get to that one and ended up with my Kia.

The closest vehicle I've probably had to a shitbox is my wife's 2013 Corolla S. :crapstorm: The 1.6L I4 and 4 speed auto are gutless and the accelerator not being responsive doesn't help. To get it to do anything, you have to floor it and wait and the car will go "are you sure?" before going. Don't try to pass on a two lane highway unless there's nothing coming for at least 20 miles. It got a new water pump about 5 years ago at about 50k miles. I just discovered the other day that the passenger side wing mirror heat no longer works. Winter tires seem like they need a balance and alignment the last couple weeks but I figured I would wait and put the summer tires on to see if that fixes the problem.
