I am finding that the paint on the new Tundra is more fragile than a wet tissue paper.

The other day, I placed an empty box on the bed sides, the wind blew it and it fell. On the way down it completely gouged my rear quarter panel paint and left a 3” scar. Today I opened the door and rested it open against a smooth tree so that it wouldn’t slam open with the wind. As I closed the door, I notice paint on the tree and yup, the door edge rubbed off. It seems like there is just primer, a coat of paint and clear and it’s super soft. I had a car for 14 years that went through worse stuff in its life that has left paint issues. Frustration is an understatement because I feel I need to completely baby this (what should be) work truck.

any one else experiencing any paint issues?

Yes, when I purchased my truck there were 12-15 spots where debris or something was painted over. The dealership had these areas repaired, but since then I have noticed several small places on the sides of my truck where paint seems to have flaked or chipped off. I have never had an issue of rock damage on the sides of any truck before; I can't imagine what is causing these little spots, but I would agree with you, the Toyota paint seems very soft.

All Toyota paint is soft and garbage. I learned to just not care and beginning of every summer take it to a pro and let them buff it all out.

personally if I buy a new vehicle which I probably won’t again I’d ceramic coat it before it left the dealership.

Not just Toyota. It is the new paints mandated by the EPA.

lol i havent touch a vehicle in like 5-10 yrs. it goes thru the carwash and that about it. dont really give a crap on how the paint looks. if it looks clean that good enough for us.

ceramics are nice, but its dependent on the owner doing the car washing themselves and doing it properly to not damage the ceramic. for me its a complete waste of money since i will never hand wash a vehicle again. carwash or nothing.

You are correct. I had a white tundra which had the fading blotch spots. the paint was water based or something. My current one gets swirls marks just by looking at it. Unfortunately ceramic coating will only help so much. I have just learned to live with it and be more careful.

Coming from a 2020 Tundra I would agree the paint, or clearcoat more specifically, seems to be waaaay easier to scratch and mar. In the PNW most forest service and logging roads get a bit overgrown this time of year and I've been shocked how easily the paint on this new truck acquires pinstripes from very light brushes with vegetation.

It is my understanding that paint on a car "dries" in a few hours, but doesn't fully harden up for something like 30-60 days. Is your truck that old yet?

Either way, I keep hearing more and more bad things about the new Tundra. I'd honestly recommend selling your 22 and getting an 18 or older.

Not sure if true but I have always heard not to wax a new vehicle for a month or 2. Of course that is dependent on when it was built.

to each person its different. its a vehicle and used as much. i take care of it, but i am not going to pamper it like some people do on here. it spends 6 months of the year in winter mode outside and some of those months its below zero for stretches. do we wash it during winter? nope to likely to freeze the locks. ask the folks that go offroading, how that first pinstripe horror sets in, then after a while its more pin striping and the horror turns into meh. i am the same way. ours has scratches, dents, etc and half of those are not even from the carwash. can it be fixed? yep, do i care to? nope. will it still trade in for top equity? yep. dealer see its and yep we want it and still make a profit.

getting close to 60 and yeah dont really care like i use to in the 20's and 30's.

just like this forum. once my work week is over (i do 4x10's / Mon-Thur), i dont even load this forum at home. i have better things to do :)

I have also noticed the paint on these new trucks, or at least mine, is complete shit. I go through an auto car wash once a week or so and the last time I did I noticed scratches all over the sides and front grill surround of the truck. Sucks worse that I got the black truck on allocation. White wouldn't show them as bad but I am definitely frustrated at the lack of quality of the paint on these trucks.

As some others have said, this isn't just a Tundra issue, it's most new cars now. They're shaving money and weight anywhere they can. That is why I went with paint protection film over 3/4s of my 22. I have talked to a few paint/body guys over the last couple of years and they routinely complain about how new car paint is extremely difficult to work with. They all said they wouldn't do more than one instance of paint correction for most newer vehicles because there is barely enough material to allow for one. Anything more and they're out of clear coat. Most clearcoats on newer vehicles are usually around 2 mils thick. For reference, a post-it note is 3.

It is not about saving money and or weight. It is about the tree huggers and the EPA.

I'm a tree hugger, and I'm also disappointed in the clear coat (or the easy scratch-ability) of the '22s :). I've got some very noticeable damage from not very violent usage of the truck. Some scratches that'll buff out, one or two that won't. Thats in 6k miles.. it'll be interesting at 50k or 100k.
