Greetings, I am looking to buy a second vehicle and I would like your input and suggestions. The truck will not be a daily driver and it’s duties are light off roading at my deer lease. I am only interested in Tundras and I am looking at value. Trying to stay under 32k.

    Here’s my requirements

    Has to be a 4x4
    Double or crew cab
Only upgrades will be bigger tires and coil over 2” probably Fox.
    Off road bumper.

    So here are questions

    1. Should I get an sr5 instead of an sr? Besides the obvious differences besides the bumper and interior features....is the suspension different between the sr and the sr5?

    2. Mileage.....here’s where I need the most help....in my mind want something under 60 k but in this market even in Texas it’s been difficult to find....what is the maximum mileage you would feel comfortable with? Thank u

    1. As far as I know, suspension is the same on the SR and SR5.

    2. Since the Tundra is proven to be a million mile plus vehicle, I would say this comes down to personal preference. Based on my experience with other makes, I'd usually like to get something under ~125k miles but, if it's been well maintained, there's no reason a higher mileage Tundra couldn't treat you well.

I did exactly as what you are trying to do. I had bare minimum requirements: double cab, 5.7L and 4x4. Bought a 2019 SR DC - paid $31,500 plus TTL. I put a new suspension, wheels, tires, radio and other cosmetic mods like TRD Pro grille and headlights. I call it my “Poor Mans TRD pro”.

Edit: I was originally looking to buy used and stay under $30k, but couldn’t find anything in that price range with under 80-90k miles. CPO trucks were $32-33k with 20-30k miles on them.

I have always purchased sr5 toyotas, truck/suv but honestly I would look for the best condition, one owner, lowest mileage that you can find in your budget. As far as mileage, I have purchased used toyotas at 85K miles or so- was a great purchase and one of the best vehicles I have ever owned.

So, I think you are on the right track- just look around and see if you can find a keeper. Unfortunately, prices on used vehicles are high right now so you may be paying a a few thousand more. I purchased my one owner 2016 crew, 4wd, 32k miles, sr5 with trd offroad, sr5 upgrade and convenience packages for 31k in late January this year- of course pre Covid. It was in line with KBB and other used value sources I researched....I paid a bit less than those sites listed. I checked KBB value a month or two ago and it was showing my trucks value at several thousand more than I paid. So, look around, even if that means nearby towns or states and you will find the right deal. I think you will know it when you see it!

I have purchased 3 tacomas and tundras in the 80k-130k range. None gave me any problems I didn't cause myself, all were good values in the long term, all were reliable. I have also had 2 new ones. The differences were only cosmetic. At the mileage you are looking at, just compare a few and look for care and pride of ownership. Not much wear from abuse or neglect is going to significantly affect the function of the truck at that young age. Pick the one the purrs the smoothest and have fun.
