Hi Everyone! Just picked up my new double cab Tundra and very excited.
I have a standard 6 1/2 foot bed, and I’m looking for an accessory that would allow me to carry 4 x 8 sheets. I really wanted to buy the long bed but parking is a real pain here. The dealership didn’t have the OEM accessory on hand but from the pictures, it looks like it’s more suited for canoes since the tapering at the edges would get in the way of putting a sheet of plywood in there...possibly. Does anyone have any experience with this? I know they make U-shaped ones out there. Would really appreciate some feedback on your experiences

In most states it is legal to have a load extend 18 inches past the rear bumper of a vehicle. My truck with its 6.5 ft bed provides 8 feet of length when the tailgate is down and so no problems with sheets of plywood or sheetrock.

The so called bed extenders that attach to the hitch are fine for a light load like a couple of kayaks, but not for a load of lumber with one exception, the Truck Covers USA American Tail-Mate that sells for $350 and it supports 1000 lbs. (if the receiver is strong enough). My factory hitch handles a load of 1500 lbs and so I have used the Tail-Mate to transport loads of PT beams weighing more than 400 lbs and loads that would have collapsed other bed extenders.

This is great information but then my question is since I will be carrying mostly 4x8s sheets and things that exceed slightly over 6.5 ft would it not be useful for say five sheets of drywall instead of having to strap it down with your tailgate open or do you feel that it’s not even suited for that purpose
