Now that I have your attention.

    So heres the story.
Picked up a 2010 tundra 5.7 with 61k on it on March 29th. Awesome truck. Have loved every minute. Until today. I have yet to do research as I have a few mixed symptoms and dont know what to investigate.

Was driving home, guy was doing 55mph in the fast lane so I attempted to pass him in the #2 lane. Got up to 75 or so, and went to hit the brakes. Unresponsive. Realizing my distance between the car ahead of me was closing, I attempted to accelerate further and make another lane change and exit the freeway and slow down via lower gears and e'brake. No throttle response. Truck was dead at 75mph.
Flashers on, manually hitting the brakes and I muscled it off the fwy onto the shoulder. Tried to restart the truck and was met with a lovely clack clack clack. I've windowed one block before on a 22re and it sounded identical. Called AAA and said screw it. Tried to restart just so I could try and hear it better, truck would crank and stutter as it attempted to fire, but seemed everytime it got into stride, it would clack clack clack again. I stopped. I couldnt safely get out and check much, but from what I could tell, no oil on the ground or pan, block was intact. Just dead.

I did notice the a/t oil pressure and check engine light on as i pulled over.

So where should I start. Its sitting at Longo Toyota for a diagnosis later but i want to be prepared for reality.

No limp mode , truck completely shut off and wouldnt restart.
Just the check engine and a/t. I couldnt turn it on and check oil pressure or anything. And I didnt get a chance to check to see if it even had oil before it was taken to the dealership (that's my fault, hindsight is 20/20) but it hasnt leaked a drop since I've had it

Broken timing belt? Do the pistons hit valves on these engines when that happens? Might explain the clacking sounds.

My brother is a mechanic. He's been seeing a lot of these 7-10 yr old tundras coming in with similar miles, same symptoms, and its been a broken timing belt everytime. 5 different trucks in last 6mos.

I’m sorry, I’m no help and don’t know what it could be but am curious to know once you find out. The lack of brakes sounds scary.

It was lack of everything. Brakes, power steering, it was all bad for about 30 sec. I was afraid of the wheel locking out but luckily it wont do that with the keys in

It’s possible the timing chain tensioner shit the bed and then the chain skipped a tooth or 2.

That would mean that the oil is trash. I have all 19 services recorded on the carfax at a dealership. Truck had 61k when I bought it

I had a ‘93 fullsize Bronco shut down on me on the highway, and that was scary. But it still had brakes and power steering. Problem with mine was that a wire harness got loose and wrapped itself around the driveshaft, pretty much killing power to the fuel pump. Yours sounds like something much different, though. Please let us know the diagnosis when you find out.

I can see that stopping the engine, but would it also kill the brakes and power steering?

Yes, no engine running-no power. Power steering pump runs off belt from engine, brakes are power assist, needs engine vacuum.
They’ll still work, just have to muscle it.

Many years ago, I drove a Land Rover. I was at a stop light, when it turned green I pressed the accelerator. About 5 seconds later I hear a "clank". Soon after, the dashboard lights up. I go to pull into the nearest parking lot, and had no power steering, and no power brakes. Temperature light, battery light, check engine light are on. I popped the hood, and I see the serpentine belt was loose. Turned out the bolt holding the tensioner pulley had snapped. I happened to pull into an Ace hardware parking lot. I bought a $3 bolt to replace it. Fixed everything.

I hope you end up with a similar solution.

You probably had brakes but with the loss of power and the fact that you were doing 70 plus they usually don’t work the same so you didn’t notice and I would think that I wouldn't notice either because I would’ve shit myself.
It’s a good thing though that you got it slowed down and stopped without hurting yourself or anybody else.

I had brakes. Just no power brakes. Just like the good ol days. A simple stomp like you're trying to not put a 5000lb truck into the back of a Corolla and a downshift to 4th gear and it was manageable
