I am in this camp. I’ve done a half dozen drain and fills on my truck without dropping the pan or filter. The filter is more of a screen instead of the microfiber filter media of most transmission filters so it doesn’t need to be changed frequently like most filters.

Reason to avoid dropping the pan unnecessarily is that the bolts can seize in the case and snap off. If you live in the rust belt you usually have a higher chance of this happening. If you are careful and lucky, you may avoid broken bolts. But be prepared to drill and tap just in case.

If it’s not leaking, then all you need is just a drain and fill.

Most will tell you to pay attention to the temps, but ultimately, warm up the truck, warm up the trans, measure drained amount, and then fill with same amount drained.
