Going to do a drain and fill soon. My question - is temp check mode necessary or can I just use my scan tool and wait until the transmission pan sensor reads 95-100 degrees and pop the check plug? Is temp check mode some mystical thing that's doing something else in the background or is it just simply telling me when the temp is ready? Thank you!

Yes it's important to run the engine to get up to the proper range before releasing excess fluid via the drain. (That's why I'll measure how much comes about and add about 1/4th quart more when refilling.)
An alternate method to determine the transmission temperature is to use an electronic digital laser temperature gun and aim it up at the top of the transmission while running to get the temp. (I compared this with my digital scanner it was very accurate...so will just use the temp gun for next service.)
Also make sure you have the truck level to get the correct amount drained out.

Scan tool is fine, it is the most accurate. It is what i use. I run it till it reaches 95F then open the overflow plug. Easy
