Trading 200 Series Land Cruiser for Tundra

I’ve been considering swapping my Land Cruiser for a 2021 Tundra but a little on the fence - mostly because I love the LC. But I’m tired of towing a camper and really want to build a truck camper with a Tundra and 4Wheel Project M. I spend a lot of time fly fishing and this just seems like a much better set up than what I’ve got now.

I want to stay with the 3UR motor - especially after reading about the 3rd gen issues. The 3UR is IMO one of the best motors ever made.

I like the TRD Pro but really like the Platinum as well. I think the Platinum is probably the better option since I’m going to replace most of the suspension components anyway. The Platinum seems a little more luxury-focused in the cabin - is that actually the case or are they about the same? Has anyone gone from Platinum to TRD Pro or vise-versa? What are your thoughts?

 

I've got a '16 Tundra and an '07 4Runner that we love, but the LC is the only thing I'd consider to replace the 4Runner; won't touch the ones after '09 when they dropped the V8

 

I think you’d regret letting go of the 200. I vote both.

 

I would not want a Tundra in place of my 200. I liked my 2nd gen Tundra, but the fit and finish of a 200 is on another level.

I love my current Tundra too, but if I had to only keep one it would be the Cruiser.

 

Payload on the Tundra is probably not enough to do what you would like. Buy a basic bones 3/4 or 1 ton. A good Tundra payload (SR) I think is 1500lbs? My SR5 is 1200.

 

GVWR and payload both higher on my 200.

 

Thanks for the feedback everyone. You’ve kinda confirmed that the anxiety I’ve been feeling since exploring this option is reasonable. Unfortunately I don’t have the space for another trail rig.

I’ll keep the 200 and trailer set up for now. I just always drool over some of these truck camper set ups! I realize the lower payload on the Tundra, which why I’d have gone with the Project M, which weighs only 400lbs. I cringe when I see these things running front/rear steel bumpers, winch, all sorts of other stuff and then topped with a 2000 lb camper.

In my experience the 200 series and the Tundra have nearly the same GVWR and payload.
My LX has 1235 lb of payload with a GVWR of 7275 lb and axle ratings of 3595 FF/4300 RR.
My ‘21 Tundra has 1270 lb of payload with a GVWR of 7200 lb and axle ratings of 4000 FF/4150 RR.

As you can see, the GVWR/payload is kind of a wash between the two, but the front axle of the 200 is rated about 10% lower than the Tundra.

If I had to have just one, it would come down to “do I absolutely need a bed?” for me. I love our LX; it’s amazing. I like driving it more than my Tundra. But I can’t put bikes, a yard of mulch, dead ungulates, muddy hunting gear, etc in the back of the LX. As much as I’d like to be a 200 series guy, a truck just has too much utility for me. So we have both.

As far as reliability goes, the Tundras and Sequoias have a higher % that make it to higher mileages, strangely enough.

Of all the truck camper options out there, that one seems pretty reasonable. I don’t know how many people you would fish and camp out of the truck with, but that camper is absolutely doable while staying within your 7200 lb GVWR if that is super important to you. I’m a few hundred pounds over when we go camping. I drive safely, give myself lots of time to stop, and the truck doesn’t care at all. Original pads have quite a bit of life left at 64k. Lots of our miles are very hard miles.

 

It sounds like you have made your decision but I would either add a tundra or keep the 200. My 100 is so much nicer than my Tundra. I can't imagine what the 200 is like.

 

Agree they are not the same - my Tundra is like flying Southwest while the 200 is a first class experience. Either will get you to your destination - one does it with much more comfort and class.

 

Another Tundra/200 owner, @ikarus, just joined the board and may have some input for the OP.

 

I was in the same boat but was able to keep the 200 and get a Tundra. To echo everyone else, I say keep the 200 and down the road get a Tundra when circumstances allow it. They only sold a few thousand 200s every year and hundreds of thousands of Tundras, so it's a special vehicle as I'm sure you already know. It'll probably be easier to pick up a clean Tundra for a camper build down the road but not as easy to find an owner willing to sell their 200.

And I feel you on the trailer, it's a love hate relationship for me. I sold our Opus and am considering getting into a hard sided MDC next. We'll see. I wish I could just do an AT Overland Habitat but a trailer just works way better for families.

The Tundra is great and feels faster/lighter/more powerful, but the 200 has that bank vault/luxury/narrower, more nimble on trails/fully boxed frame going for it.

 

Damn that is a sexy 200. Can’t keep up with that but I’ll try.

 

I can't take too much credit, I just yanked the roof basket and threw on some Toyo RTs. Bone stock otherwise. They did a good job with the chrome delete on the HEs.

Yours looks great, I would have loved dark blue but I think they stopped that color in 2020? And are those Heritage wheels?

Not sure when they dropped the dark blue - I love the color scheme with the dark brown leather and black headliner.

Ordered the heritage wheels the same day we bought it - that was the only way wife was signing off on the deal.

 

you have the OP4? Have been towing ours with a 19 then 22 tundra and first voyage in the 21 Seqouia here shortly…. Also wanna trade my black TRD wheels for those heritage wheels lol

 

Had one for a few years but sold it last year. It's a great trailer, I loved it. It's hard to find a good replacement for something with that level of interior space without bumping up to a 6-7K lb trailer. I bet the Sequoia will do great - the 200 towed it well. The only vehicle I didn't love towing it with was my Tacoma. Just a little slow on climbs.



And no sorry haha I love the bronze Heritage wheels. I almost want to put a set on the Tundra - wish they were a slightly lower offset.

 

This was my plan until they removed the vin lock and prices tripled.

 

I was actually just about to DM you and ask where you found yours! I have the VIN, but yeah I don't want to pay $3K or whatever they go for used.

 

I was able to get them for under $500 a wheel at my dealer’s parts counter - close to $1000 now.

I'm in the process of tricking my wife into trading her 4runner for an LC200 or LX570. Definitely keeping the Tundra. I want to have dual 5.7s!

 

Our numbers are growing… I think @ikarus makes about 4 members that have gone two deep on 3URs.

 

yea we love our opus- set up with 2 young kids and break down is a bit of a pain in the butt with 1 set of hands truly but it’s impossible to beat the size and openness of it.


I’m running 1.25in spidertrax spacers on my pro wheels and the poke is solid, should have done 1.5 with the pizza cutters actually

I'm double-3URed as well.

 

Sell the LC and your camper, buy a Sequoia. Same 3UR + AB60 combo, locking central differential. Can get a lift, or stock FOX PRO suspension, or stock air suspension in rear. With 2nd and 3d row folded down 2 adults sleep inside comfortably. Roof rack for extra storage. Possibly, Yakima EXO on the hitch, if your trails don't ask for departure angles.

If I have to sell 2 of our vehicles and live with only one, my old Volvo wagon and Tundra would have to go. Sequoia can both haul the family in comfort and be trail worthy.
