Hey everyone 2 years ago I made the horrible decision to trade my 2010 for a Ram 1500. My 2017 Ram with only 85k miles is already rotting out and having petty issues I can’t stand. Once this thing is paid off I’m planning to go back to a 2017 or new Tundra. Have they fixed the smog pump issues or the Cam girdle oil leak issue? I had both issues with my last tundra. Thank you!

I'm not sure what the smog pump issue is/was, but the cam tower leaks are still a thing. Still not a big thing, but nothing real significant has changed on the 5.7 platform. They did delete the external transmission cooler on 2019+ trucks. Whether or not that is a big deal is a highly debated issue. Lots of threads on it.

Ya the smog pump is a little air pump that is suppose to help push exhaust gasses through the exhaust. Its located under the air intake manifold has/had issues with sucking in water since the intake for the pump is in the wheel well under all the plastics.. a failed smog pump caused my truck to go into limp mode and luckily it had a recall so it didn’t cost me $1500 to get it fixed..I do remember having the small oil leak from the cam tower but I wasn’t about to pay my local dealers $2500 to get it fixed.

Huh. Never hear of the smog pump. I thought it might have been an EGR or something. Learn something new every day, right? :)

I'm thinking that he is referring to the AIP failure that most of the guys do the Hewitt bypass kit on.

Gotcha lol. It's an air pump failure that would put your truck in limp mode. Many threads on it if you sear AIP or Hewitt bypass. One of the threads explains what the system does and what happens when it fails IIRC.

I was under the impression if the aip has a failure on 2014+ it wont go into limp mode but will just light up dash like an xmas tree, but that is just something i thought i read on this forum.

He’s referring to the AIP system. And yes, it’s still in the same spot and vulnerable to the same issues.

It def will go into limp. Won’t be able to drive over 40 mph when the light is on.

Ya if I was very parent then I’d hit 60 mph but it takes like 30 minutes to get there.. other then those two issues I loved my tundra. Just wish it wasn’t so damn expensive to fix either of those issues

Sounds like it would be worth having a Hewitt kit in the glove box to throw on when it happens.
