First time poster and owner of a 22 Tundra <24 hours.

I picked up 3 2x4's from Lowes last night. Thought I was being very careful. Even wrapped the boards in a towel where they rested on the tailgate. New truck babying. Looked in my bed though this morning and a quarter size piece of the factory bed liner was torn off. (See photo) I tugged on it some and frankly to me there are adhesion issues between the spray liner and the bed.

Any advice or experiences on this before I go back to the dealer?

    Thanks

PS - Aside from this, loving the truck!

Sorry this happened. I'd take it to the dealer and ask them to fix it. My 2010 CM had Line-X that was 99% perfect at 9 years and 190k

My only advice is, take it back right away while the liner still looks clean and new, so it’s clearly a poor installation, not abuse by you.

I’m imagining it is not easy to get as good of a bond to plastic with line x. Hopefully its fixable.

As already said, take it back. If one spot came off then I would worry about the rest of the liner being a problem as well.

Yup take it back at one point they were having adhesion issues and were not going to put bedliners in. There are a couple posts about it somewhere in here??

As everyone else has said, take it back. I've had 3 Line-X installs in the past, and then the current factory spray-in bedliner on my '20 Tundra...and all were and are flawless, and that's abusing the @$%@ out of them. Obviously manufacturer/installer defect.

I beat my bed liner with wood, concrete blocks, mulch, all kinds of stuff, never had any issues thus far. Definitely an adhesion issue as others have said.

As others have said that is definitely an adhesion issue. You should be able to slide a 2x4 on the liner and have a nicely sanded end on your 2x4 not a screwed up truck.
Also, That looks thin AF, you deserve a 2nd coat

There was a time during production where they halted bed lining because they were having adhering problems. Dealer should do something.

The spray-in liner is fully warrantied. I've already beaten mine up with 5 full bed loads of various garbage to the dump. No issues with my liner.

You shouldn't have to baby it. I don't. If it tears...take it to the dealer for a repair. It's an easy fix. They'll scrap it back to remove any loose liner, apply adhesion promoter, and apply a spot patch. It's pretty much the same procedure for small repairs at any Rhino or LineX shop.

I can tell you the factory spray definitely is not consistent in how it adheres. I removed the spray on from the top 2 inches or so on the cab end of mine to get a better seal for the tonneau. I had some sections that I could just peel off long strips with ease and other sections I could barely scrape off with a tool

Sorry to see this. Recommend you remind them of the Toyota advertisement showing them dumping stuff from a Front end loader into the bed showing everyone how tough it is. It's a huge PIA but am sure they will fix it

I seem to remember a line item maybe on the factory MSRP sheet about the warranty on the bed liner, seemed like it stated backed by Toyota and the dealer. I'm sure they will stand behind it and repair.

I have a 1 week old tundra with the same thing! I’ve had a stroller in the bed and I think a cooler once. Super cautious!

it’s quarter sized, but looks like it could easily peel to can sized.

I just found it, going to call the dealer on Monday.

Wow...I'm sorry that happened to you.

Here's what I've done so far and learned with this. (I'm the original poster)

The dealer I purchased from (2 hr roundtrip) cannot do bedliner repairs inhouse, but was arranging for a 3rd party subcontractor to do a warranty repair.

My closest dealer cannot do bedliner repairs inhouse either. And after talking to their Toyota Rep, they said it was caused by "external influence" and refused to warranty it. (You have got to be kidding me. F*ck them)

So I called the Toyota Customer Experience 800 #. After explaining all to them, they arranged to have the dealer I purchased from find a local (to me) repair location. After a few days, they arranged for the local Line-X applicator to repair and will turn the bill back to Toyota warranty.

So Thursday I take to Line-X. Talking to the Line-X contact on the phone, they will probably try to strip the bed completely and install a complete Line-X bedliner. Frankly, that's what I prefer. I want the factory bedliner gone. We'll see how things go Thursday.

I do find it interesting that 2 Toyota dealers cannot do bedliner repairs, even though the description for the factory bedliner contains the statement "Fully warranted; repairs completed quickly and easily at a Toyota dealership". That is obviously BS.

Man, what a goat rope. I would prefer a Linex spray as well, OEM spray sucks. Those poor 800 reps, lol, they are getting worn out! I'm waiting on a call Monday from my second case manager! Crazy...

Continuing to come off on it's own. Now a new spot where I put a 2x4 in the vertical slots with bike mounts attached. Line-X scheduled for tomorrow on Toyota's dime.

so happy Toyota is taking care of you, but what a frustration dealing with the dealers I can not believe they tried to pawn the poor craftsmanship on external forces that is bull shit , and glad you demanded and stood up for the correct course of remedy…. what a sad world of affairs dealers have become so shady an awful dirty.

hey i am not familiar with bed liners can someone educate me a bit on the difference between bedliners: OEM , Herculiners, LINEX , Rhinoliner ………

The chemical make up of both are pretty similar. Rhino tends to be thicker, but "softer" (i.e more rubbery) whereas Line-X is thinner, but coats more uniformly. Line-X also tends to be more coarse and tougher, in my opinion. The OEM bed liner, based on my experiences with past liners, very similar to Line-X.

The difference is the in the application. Line-X is sprayed at a VERY HIGH temperature and a VERY HIGH pressure. I think the actual application temp of Line-X like north of 200 degrees. It's pretty grueling work. Especially when you have to remove an existing application and reapply. I had an acquaintance that used to work for a Line-X franchise.

The only spray-in liner that I know of that has a significant chemical difference between the Rhino & Line-X is Raptor Liner. Raptor is more like a 2-part resin & hardener.

I seriously doubt that Toyota is using some proprietary system/product. Like most of the other Toyota accessories, I'm willing to bet that Toyota has outsourced this to Rhino or Line-X or some other bed liner company. They may spray it in-house, but I'm sure the actual product & application system is one of the bigger liner companies.

Note: I've now had 4 different types of liners over the years - Rhino, Line-X, OEM, and Raptor. The Raptor I sprayed myself on my Taco after the clearcoat & paint started to go. Pics below.

It’s complete horse shit that a dealer / Toyota would say it was caused by external and therefore not warrantied. It’s a GD pick up truck……now if you had a mod of cinder blocks dropped from a bucket at a height of four feet, I can see that being denied. But this is a direct result of either poor prep work by the installer or the fact that they need to figure out something better to adhere to the composite bed. I am glad they’re taking care of you but if thiamin’s a result of the bed material it’s going to happen again

Its like it was applied without any type of prep or bonding agent in between the extremely slick factory bed and the spray on liner. Similar to the results that you would get if you painted bare plastic with a rattle can. Might look okay at first but later on it will really start to peel.

Yeah, I'd ask for clarification there myself; I mean, WTF does one use a truck bed for? I didn't buy my '20 Tundra with the intention of hauling around a bedful of rose petals, but based on the 'external forces' response it sure seems like anything more than that would tax their bedliner. LOL

Very likely. You're supposed to apply adhesion promoter whenever your applying to composites, plastics, or smooth painted surfaces. I've sanded painted surfaces with 120g paper before and I still use adhesion promoters.

I can guarantee that the adhesion promotor on this application was either applied poorly or not at all.

I've beaten the piss out of mine since I got the truck in December. Several loads of lumber, 2 pallets loaded by a forklift, and 6 beds of home construction debris to the local dump. Zero issues with my OEM bed liner so this was just poor prep work or a poor application by someone.

It looks like Toyota isn't sanding the composite bed before applying the primer/adhesion layer. The bed looked smooth in the pictures above. Their primer/adhesion layer doesn't look like it was sprayed evenly either.
