Recently came across a 2005 Tundra for sale and thanks to the sticky on this forum inspected for frame rust. Wanted to get the opinions from this group to gauge if anyone would bother attempting to fix it up or walk just walk away. If you'd try to get it fixed up, any guesstimates on cost to fix? For reference, truck has ~255,000 miles.

Driver side rail hole. This is worst hole that I saw. Thinking though that this could potentially be repaired by welding a plate. Relatively easily accessible but less confident about backside next to gas tank.:

Other concerning part is on the passenger side frame rail on the inside. Almost looks like layers are peeling. Not sure if it OEM would be one piece and someone attempted to repair by adding a layer? Or if OEM is multiple layers and it is rusting from inside out at this point.

Cross member above the spare looks pretty good from all angles.

Back bumper looks pretty rough all the way around but seems to be mostly surface rust.

Not sure if this is a frame piece or an add on but it is definitely new. Running parallel to the muffler.

Run like hell dude. It's fucked, and 2005 isn't eligible for the frame recall.

I have one from Harbor Freight. They aren’t that great at seeing a large area since it’ll be out of focus and have poor lighting. So you’re limited into only what you bump into going into your frame channel. A more expensive one costing several hundred usually overcomes those limitations.

Can’t say where to rent an expensive one like your proctologist uses, so I won’t speculate.

Canada, eh? So your options are limited I suppose? Like in not buying one from the southern states? Because those problems are what you deal with when owning one, not buying into that sort of headache.

    Too many, but not enough....
I wouldn't get that truck unless you only plan to use it a couple years.

I got this one on scAmazon fro Depstech. I paid like $50 USD. They discontinued the one I bought, probably so they don't need to support it under warranty, but it's come in clutch a couple times now. I actually have some pics I took under the intake recently to check for rodent damage (none found).

The only part of the frame that's boxed in is the very front. Force the flash on, then stick the phone right up so it's touching the frame. I've been able to get good pics of mine that way. BTW, that front frame area is not where you'll generally find rust problems: it's the mid-section that's laminated with support brackets, and the rear starting around the rear axle and all the way back to the trailer hitch (particularly the cross member that supports the spare tire).

I'd pass. That hole in the frame is likely to look a lot worse on the other side, and I bet there are more bad spots you'll find as you look more.

That piece by the muffler looks like a replacement part to me. Didn't know that part was available, will have to look into that one.

They moved the vapor canister from under the hood to under the bed starting in 2003 I believe. That's what we're seeing here. I had to replace this part on my truck because it rusted into dust, but it's not structural in any way...all it does is hold the vapor canister.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info. That piece of steel is almost dust on mine, but everything around it looks ok. I figured the evap cannister was probably behind there, but hadn't investigated it.
