I have a '24 Crewmax short bed with deck rails. I'm trying to decide between the Truxedo Lo Pro

2024 Toyota Tundra Truxedo Lo Pro Soft Roll Up Tonneau Cover | RealTruck or the Rough Country tri-fold
Amazon.com: Rough Country Hard Flip Up Truck Bed Tonneau Cover for Toyota Tundra (2022-2024) - Fits 5'7" (66.7") Beds : Automotive

Also, would be open to buying used as long as its in good shape.
Any past experience with either of these or other recommendations (under $1K) would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, definitely message their forum rep. The price differences between the website and the forum are pretty big depending on the product.

I just got the Gator EFX cover from them through this forum. It fits perfectly with no issues and it's made in USA. Not sure if I'm allowed to tell you the forum price, but it's between the $600 and $700 range.

I would avoid the rollup variety entirely. The last one i owned was a disappointment.
my only advice for a tri-fold would be, if possible, to pick the style where all 3 panels lift up and block the rear window instead of the type where 2 panels fold over each-other and rest on the fixed one closest to the back window. It becomes an issue should you ever require the full length of the bed above the bedrails.

I don’t care for the roll up bed covers. The tri-fold on my truck seems to fit tight & I can stand on it if I have to. It also locks so I think the ‘priceless’ items in my truck’s bed are less likely to be stolen.

I have the OEM tri fold cover on mine and I hate it. Had rollup ones on all of my previous trucks and they are the best. Take no space when folded, easy to use, unaffected by weather. I had that Truxedo lo pro on my last truck and I really liked it.

So my Bakflip MX4 says it'll support 400 lbs. on top, but I've always been a little scared to test that. Have you actually stood on yours?

OP, I really like my hard tri-fold. A lot of times I just flip the back panel to get at what I need and it's super quick.

I hear a lot of people saying they love their roll-up, the idea just didn't appeal to me for my lifestyle and use, and no way would I get a soft one.

Yes, I'm sure mine could be defeated but at least it would take more than a butter knife.

I'm glad to hear that you like the fit, the EFX looks great on your Tundra!

Yes. I’ve stood on it a handful of times & I’ve thrown a few square bales of hay on it to transport them out to a pasture. It’s not something I’d recommend doing on a daily basis but in a pinch it has worked. My complaint against roll up covers is I can never pull them tight enough on the sides to stop the ripple effect when going down the highway. It’s odd, but the fluttering of the cover in the rear view mirror catches my attention & distracts me. Like I said I know it’s odd.

Yeah, I've strapped some stuff to the top a couple times but that weight is a bit more spread out... in my head it always worried me that standing on it would have my weight very concentrated in one spot, just always picture myself buckling a panel and going through it, standing there in my truck bed feeling really stupid. :(

Not odd at all... I've noticed that fluttering just from driving next to a truck with a roll-up, and my first thought was "God, that would bug the hell outta' me seeing that in my mirror!"

I’m also a fan of hard tri fold, I have the toyota oem but not officially compatible with any rack systems if that’s important to you

Now there are so many tonneau covers on the market it confusing the heck out of people. Key words for weight rating on tonneau cover - EVENLY Distributed. If you stand on it be very careful where you stand, bend the folding hinge and it will never close properly again. As I tell our customers, keep a couple 2 x 8 pieces of wood in back of truck to put across top of tonneau cover if hauling something on top of it. Small blocks on the ends where it sits on truck box.
Access Cover has been around for many years, also has roll up and hard folding covers. Leer hard folding HF650M has been good for us. Be sure to seal up the front of the plastic bed caps if leaking is a concern.
