I just installed 4 KO2’s on a new set of wheels. I told Costco that I didn’t want to mess with the TPM sensors and that I would just live with the light on my dash. Anyway, I’ve been driving around now for two days on my new tires/wheels and the light on the dash has not come on. My stock tires, wheels and sensors are all still intact and are stacked in my garage.

How long does it take for my truck computer to recognize that I no longer have TPM sensors in my tires? I have stopped and restarted my vehicle multiple times, for two days, and still no light on my dash. What’s up?

Most likely they moved the sensors to the new tires!
iirc, it's against the law for the shops to remove a working tpms.

In general tire shops typically don't listen or forget what you tell them anyways ... That's been my experience with Discount Tires about %50 of the times. You have to sit and watch them :D

Just realized that you also got new rims ... maybe they put new sensors and reprogrammed it or maybe they moved the old sensors ... Check your bill for any charges. I'm still going based on the illegality thing unless they've changed the laws. Is there a quick way to disable the TPMS like a fuse? I doubt Costco would remove the tpms and/or disable the warning system. Other less likely scenarios are that you never had a functioning tpms or the computer is lazy or stupid and will eventually figure out what's going on.

Also are you sure the old tires are in the garage and not in the bed of your truck? lol

I watched them through a window at the shop and I can verify that they didn’t disassemble my old tires and wheels to harvest the TMP’s.

I did haul my old tires home in the back of my truck but removed them when I got home. They will stay in my garage until hunting season is over and then get reinstalled on my truck. I marked my tires so I could put them back on exactly where took them off. That way the computer would just reconnect with the sensors automatically.

It’s odd that my trucks computer is not recognizing that the tires were removed. When I start my vehicle, the light comes on momentarily but then turns off. This makes me think that 1) it takes the computer more than two days to recognize that there are no sensors, or 2) Costco accidentally installed new sensors in my new wheels and they didn’t charge me, or 3) the computer is detecting the old tires that are now stacked in the back of my garage (they are about 40 feet away from vehicle when it’s at home). This is so strange.

    It is strange.

you would think the computer should be communicating or reading tire pressure data every 5-10 seconds to detect if a tire is going flat! That is if you get far enough from the garage.

As far as I know, Tundra used a direct tpms which will send the pressure and temperature data ... indirect tmps uses the wheel speed sensors that the anti-lock brake system uses to detect the wheel speed and figure out if a tire is losing pressure ... However, I don't think Tundra is using the indirect system. Otherwise you could have wheel sensor issues along with I assume ABS issues.

I noticed a similar thing happen when I swap a different set of wheels with TMPS that was reprogrammed to my truck yet. I could drive around with my summer setup that wasn't programmed for a week almost before the TPMS light register on the dash shows. I believe there is timeframe before the truck actually registers that it can't connect to the TPMS that is programmed to the truck. I believe the light don't show as fast if you are only doing short trips with the truck.

The truck will notice right away if there are no "registered" sensors. If your light is not on, you may have "registered" sensors installed. Look at the valve stem and verify that sensors are installed. When you go to the display screen, does it show pressures or dashes? It will take about 2 minutes with the truck running before they pop up. If pressures do show after a few minutes, you are good to go. If they do not show and you verified that sensors are installed, do this procedure. I just did this on mine last week. Don't worry about #2....I skipped it when I did mine.
    1. Stop the vehicle and turn off the engine
Tire pressure reset process cannot be done while the vehicle is moving.
    2. Adjust the cold tire pressure in all four tires recommended on the tire placard
The tire placard located on the door panel
    3. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” position without starting the engine
If your vehicle has an ignition button, press the POWER button twice without touching the brake pedal
    4. Look for the TPMS reset button and press the button until the tire pressure indicator Blinks slowly three times.
Each model year has a different button location
    5. Wait for several minutes with the engine switch in the “ON” position, to allow the system to record each tire’s pressure, then turn the engine off.

thank you for the detailed procedures. I looked at my valve stems and can’t tell if new tire pressure sensors have been installed. Do they look different than regular stems?

The pressures that are displayed are from my old tires, I think. They are 31, 31, 30, 30. I took my pressure gauge and verified that my tire pressure is actually 45 psi on all four tires. My new tires are high pressure all terrain tires.

I guess what it’s doing is locking onto the old tires that are stacked in my garage, about 35 - 45 feet away from my truck computer. I park in the same spot in my driveway every evening. That said, I have traveled many miles away from my home and restarted the vehicle (while away) multiple times.

it appears to me that the changeover is NOT immediate.

If you have sensors, they will look like this. My stock tires are about 6 feet away from mine. I think once yours are registered then it won't see the old ones.

Mine look like normal rubber valve stems. They must be high pressure ones.

Your receipt will tell you, the tire shop wouldn't install sensors for free.

If they look like this then there are no sensors installed.

I didn’t get a receipt for the free installation of new tires. I specifically asked NOT to have them installed because their aftermarket versions can deal with high psi tires, so I was told. Thanks

I don’t think I have them. I think my truck is still detecting the tires I have that are stacked in m garage.

When you are away from home, your light should come on when you lose signal.

Thanks for all the help and info. It took nearly a week for it to finally not recognize my old TPMS’s. Hopefully the computer in the truck would recognize a deflated tire a little more quickly. LOL
