When fitting a new timing belt with the cams on their marks, the balancer mark is about 2 degrees right of TDC. If I place the belt one cog either way, it's even further off. This is the way it was before taking the old belt off. Should I just go with that position?

they maybe slightly off due to the tensioner not being engaged. My cams were about half a tooth off until I pulled the pin on the tensioner and everything lined up proper as fuck

Unless I read your question wrong? Lol

About 2 degrees right of center on the crankshaft pulley put the timing marks on the cams at the "T" mark IIRC. Which is correct and can be confirmed when you rotate the engine 720 degrees. All marks should then line up.
