    New owner 0f 04 SR5 4x4 Double Cab.

Occasionally when I am driving reverse, there are a series of loud thunking noises as the truck is moving and it almost feels as if the wheels or the driveline is meeting resistance. This is most common after early startup and I go from park into reverse. Occasionally happens while going forward at low speeds too. More often happens when wheels turned, but has happened when truck is going straight as well.

Recently greased my driveshaft, and that solved other issues I was having, including rough shifting from park, but this still happening.

Have no idea if it is ABS, improperly adjusted rear brakes, transmission pawl, differential?...

Last owner had rear breaks done in last 10k miles, but unsure if they were adjusted properly. Did the e-brake trick, but not sure if that has anything to do with this. Also not sure how to tell whether or not my vehicle has VSC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The ABS module with brake lines going in/coming out would be the 4"x4" block mounted over the right inner fender in the engine bay. I don't have it, so you'd only see mounting holes if yours was like mine.

The VSC thing would have a button on the dash for it. You can google the owner's manual for your 2004 from the toyota website to look up exactly what's printed on it and where specifically on the dash it would be located.

I can't comment on the clunking though.

VSC doesn't always have the button. I think the other sign of VSC is if the truck has the little silver keg-barrel thing next to the MC/booster.

VSC button is normally to the left of the 4HI/4LO button if there's manual VSC control.

How would you override it without a button? I thought that was always under user control.

I'm pretty sure there's an auto-VSC function you can't actually disable in some trucks. Hell if I remember. I just recall seeing trucks with the little VSC keg thingy but no button. Always DCs too.

Thank you. I probably don't have VSC then, as I suspected.

Presence of this canister is, from what someone else said on here, another indication of VSC.

I'm pretty sure vsc is only on 05-06 trucks.

I had a broken leaf spring. Check the driveline for cracks or broken parts. Check the cross member for cracks. Check the drums and the lug nuts ebrake cables etc

My guy added a number of things but not VSC. According to the 04 Brochure, it was however an option for SR5 and Limited.

Nice. I thought it had something to do with the 5spd and the weird speedometer/wheel speed sensors.

    :notsure:

Looked little further after yard work in this God awful heat and according to the 1st Gen New Features of each year, 04 was indeed the year they made VSC optional.

I'm tossing up two examples of VSC identification in 1st gens, pulled from my local CL

Keg can + the stubby MC + "Auto LSD" button, this is on a 2004 DC 2WD:

This is taken from a 4WD:
