7 months old and this..... stupid ford guy, we were dead stopped in traffic and he claims to have slipped off the brake and onto the gas. So far it looks like bumper and tailgate but I am hoping no frame damage. Computer is flashing airbag system light malfunction and a seat belt light wont go off, truck drives fine, gate wont stay closed.

sorry about that. Just get it checked out and hopefully it is just some parts and no frame issues. Looks like your bed is not buckled, which is good.

His ford looks pretty damaged, and leaking. Going to be a big bill for him, full front clip and hood, lights and some mechanical components at a minimum. Also looks like his driver side wheel may be sitting back farther than the passenger side $$$

Yeah Ford is dead lol. I looked under mine and I don't see frame damage, hoping its just a simple bumper and tailgate, bed seems fine. I always leave the tow ball on for this reason. I am just pissed we just got the truck in Jan. I thought having the same insurance would make it easier but after searching and reading some others posts in here sounds like that makes it harder. State farm and the guy totally admitted is was his fault, which was obvious

I am guessing this isn't normal or good right? Its on the passenger side a little past where the bed and body come together.

Hard to look at, glad no one is hurt. Hopefully insurance takes good care of you. That would ruin my week.

Dollars to donuts the guy had a cellphone in his hand.....

What I learned: I have to get a hitch like that and leave it in.

Yep I am sure he was fiddling with his phone, really irritating having a truck so new and this happens and now it looks like there is some frame damage

sorry to see this, it would take me a lot to suppress my rage if i was hit while we were all stopped.
on a different note, i'm not sure if its valid or an old wives tale but this reminds me to ask my insurer as around here i've heard leaving a hitch while not towing can result in a ticket for even if you're not the offender. something to do with the additional damage they cause.

If that’s illegal then most of the trucks I see can be ticketed.

That really sucks. Sorry to see that happen to you. My current and last Tundra both got hit from behind at around 6-7 months old. I was mad enough about minor damage to the bumper caps. I’d lose my mind over that one.

Make sure the insurance company pays you diminished value also. That truck will never recover the value it had now.

Googling IL laws on trailer hitches...

Is it Illegal to Drive with a Hitch?
You can leave the hitch on the rear of a motor vehicle if it does not extend more than four inches beyond the bumper. Any hitch that extends beyond this must be removed.

My grandpa would always leave his in, mostly because he was probably considered legally blind and used it to know when he was backing into shit before damaging his truck. I brought this up to him a few times growing up...

That blows. Glad you showed restrain though. Assault charges would've just made things worse. Even though F150 dude deserved every bit of it.

Really surprise to see the frame distortion with what looks like somewhat minimal damage to the AFT end of the vehicle. Guessing the hitch displaced all that force right into the frame rails. When the insurance gets you a new Pro, maybe look into a stout set of sliders to help strengthen the frame? Hopefully you wont need it, but "a just in case" like the hitch.

I definitely thought if there was frame damage it would have been down towards the bed and where the impact was. What should I do if they try to just fix this?

Siberian, I'm pretty sure that section of frame you have pictured is normal, and just due to the way our frames are manufactured. My frame is the exact same way and has never been in an accident. If you look closely at that area where the ripple is, its right where it begins to bend and head up to the bed. I'll add some pics of mine, and a vid I found of a Tundra on its side. Look at the 10-11 sec. mark, and you will see the same ripples. Maybe others here can take a look in the same spot on theirs to confirm this.

the thing with trailer hitch is that it will transfer the blunt of the impact to the frame.
Best in this case is not to have any where the impact is all across the rear bumper instead.
However it does a good job at messing up the culprit front end :)

This would make me punch pictures of kittens.

I think you got lucky with the hitch being in and not bending the frame down. Those receivers act like a lever.

I was in a similar situation with my Taco. Sitting at a crosswalk, when I was rear ended by someone going so fast, left about 50 feet of skid marks, then still part of his front end was under my rear tires. I remember my truck rolling off. Had a nice seatbelt stripe across my chest afterwards. I had sliders on that truck. luckily the frame damage was minimal like yours (bed of my Taco was touching the cab on one side). I forget exactly where though. The body shop straightened and aligned it. Did a great job. Upon getting it back, I had one of my friends drive it while I followed. Drove perfectly straight and never had any issues. Find a good shop if they dont salvage it. Make sure it drives straight from behind (no crab walking). You should be good to go. Best of luck!

Years ago a guy rear-ended my wife's car. 100% his fault as the car was legally parked and my wife was inside the house. Her car was a total loss. Both had State Farm. Absolute nightmare as no matter what SF was paying and they tried every play in the book to minimize what they were going to pay. It will help if you have rental car coverage as they will be paying for that and that does help push them along a bit.
