2024 Tundra (build 2/2024) not identified in the recall, but thinking some 2024's might be included at some point. With the engine debris issue is there any benefit of a 1000 mile or less oil change or am I already in trouble if debris is present?Maybe 1000-5000-10000 oil changes? My Tundra is currently sitting in the garage at 750 miles until Toyota provides more info on a fix. Driving a gen 1 with 188,000 miles currently.

I bought my Tundra 4 weeks ago(build date is after recall and it’s a hybrid) with 3500 miles on it and dealership claimed they changed the oil. I had no reason not to believe them, but when I got to 5000 miles last week and went in for service at my local dealer I asked for an oil change anyway and the tech came out and told me it looked good and he even cut open the filter to make sure no flakes were in it.

Moral of the story is…. Why not?

I changed at 1k and 5k before all this panic about recall. Paid for both oil changes at dealer and sent my 5k oil over to blackstone for analysis.
Will it hurt to change early, only your wallet. Will it help to change oil early, likely not.
    You do you

Do it! I changed mine at 1k, then again at 5k, and now do them at every 5k intervals. I've done this to all prior new vehicles and never had issues. Once upon a time when brands/dealerships were somewhat decent, they even suggested this in the manual.

Yeah, there's no downfall to it except maybe money. I generally dump the initial oil in most every new car between 500 and 1k miles, including my 24 Tundra. I even did the rear diff before 1k as well.

I would change it every 500 miles if I could. I did change at 800 miles, and then last week at 2,360 miles. I will let you form your own opinion, but as many have said, this doesn’t look good. My TRD Pro built 3/24:

if you are truly worried about debris, pick up a filter cutting tool to open the filter and look in the pleats. You will immediately know if major problem(s) on the horizon.

I always like to do an early oil change on a new engine, helps get the assembly lubes that are used when the engine is built out of the system. Also, a lot of the initial wear that occurs on an engine during break-in happens very early, so you are going to get that stuff out of the engine as well. Some debris in the oil is normal, that is why engines use oil and filters.

Can't hurt to change it. I'd do it if it were my truck and add a Fumoto Valve in the process. The Fumoto will make changes mess free and simple. I added mine at 1500 miles when I dumped the oem oil. Changed the oil again at 5K. Nothing found in either oil change that looked unusual - 5/23 build. Knock on wood.

Lots of opinions on this. For what it’s worth I dumped oil @1000k then the plan is every 5k or 6 months (km) whichever comes first.

I live in Canada (brrrr) and I often drive short distances so I fall into “severe service”

regardless of opinions, and data (blackstone) and wether or not it actually matters, I change oil to these timelines.

I can afford it and it makes me feel better, rightly or wrongly.

I understand with the engine breaking in I'm sure there will be small pieces of debris, also if they left debris in the engine the oil filter should filter it ... shouldn't be anything going through ?? I have 2023 TRD PRO and love the truck, I did 1000 and every 5000 thousand oil change can never hurt. I think bad bearing parts, hope for the best .

I have been changing mine every 5K. I had a cam failure at 19K , but since the repair no issues at all. Now at 41K
The shavings you see after an oil change is not telling the whole story. Like it has been said earlier , open your filter. That’s where it’s all at .
The ones that will do the most damage are in your filter and they were in the bearings doing damage before they were filtered out.
I’m having difficulty believing this is strictly a cleaning issue.

These type of issues can be relatively easy to resolve in the production process. The design problems are not.
My camshaft was frozen in the seat. it went from 0 to failure . Tried to start in the morning and it wouldn’t move.
They had to replace the cover as well due to damage. So I’m thinking its more then shavings.

We will find out in time.

Toyota, if you are listening. If you let us down on the recall you will loose us all in the truck market. Problems do happen but how you handle them tells the story of your reputation going forward.

If I wanted a full size truck there was no where else to go.

Honda was a very close 2nd. For me. I test drove every new full size truck out there. They ALL have major issues.

I’ve done an early change on every new car/truck/bike I’ve owned. It’s cheap insurance and good to flush out any break-in debris. The first oil itself is subjected to higher temps in a new motor from increased friction. No internal mechanical failures in over 2 dozen vehicles and 44 yrs.

I did my first oil change at 5K with major protest from the service writer. I wonder if that will help with the recent engine manufacturing recall/TSB? Getting the debris out sooner can’t hurt can it?

Doubt it. Anything sucked up by the pump goes straight into the filter. Many have found the “glitter” when they drain the filter.

I changed the oil in my 2022 every 100 miles. You can never be too safe. It's cheap insurance. It's easy since it's a pickup and you don't have to put it on jackstands. It helps with fuel mileage. It allows you to inspect the rest of your vehicle.

Did I hit all the touchpoints?

I would never drive my 3rd gen that far without changing it earlier. Hence, why I do 20 mile oil changes. It's expensive, and I have to carefully plan routes/trips to allow for immediate pull over and oil change. It's especially a pain when taking vacation 600 miles away :(.

Here is an interesting and scientific video on oil, very informative if youve got 30 min to burn.
Topic of discussion is diesels, but also includes some insight into gasoline engines.

I as well have changed my oil at 1K, 5K, and 8K given the recent concerns.
If the engine does go, hopefully a new complete engine from Toyota will make it right before the warranty expires.

Recent oil reports show they are using super high moly oil from the factory - I’d be hesitant to change it before a few thousand miles as it breaks in. I believe this is a result of the failures seen on the early 3rd gens.

I think the molybdenum disulfide is used as an assembly lubricant and plays little if any part in the break in process. You remember the days when new or rebuilt engines required non detergent oils for break in?

You get 2 free oil changes, but my dealer stated if I change before 10,000 I would have to pay....whats the difference if you use them up early !

I did it at 5000 and dealer at 10,000..just did it again at 15,000 before the recall, my hybrid not in it just want to check... I may want to look at the filter first or do the oil analyst before the dealer does the 20,000.
