OK, so in October I purchased a 2013 Double cab Tundra. My previous Tundra was no longer inspectable and was getting too expensive to keep fixing.
I like my new Truck, I just don't love it. So, I'm looking to trade again.
My first Tundra was a 2001 SR5 TRD off road with a 5.7 V8. Excellent fuel mileage. LOVED that truck!
My second Tundra is a 2013 with a 4.6 V8, but not SR5 or TRD. Terrible fuel mileage.

I was playing around on Toyota's website and built a 2022 Tundra SR5 TRD off road double cab and really liked it...and the price wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Only option I didn't like was that Tundra no longer offers the V8.

Does anyone have a 2022 SR5 off road package in the double cab? What are your thoughts? Pros/cons? Fuel economy?

Will you spend for the optional V8 sound via stereo?

I have a 22 Limited Off Road in Double Cab... On my second tank of gas, and am only getting 15.5mpg combined... My 14 Double Cab SR5 TRD OR was getting 13.5 when I sold it this year...

I am a little surprised, given I see folks on here saying they are getting 18-20+ on the non-hybrid like my 22, but I haven't yet figured out what I'm doing wrong...

Any increase from the 14 is good, but on the flip side I bought a truck, so mpgs aren't a priority...

It’s kind of crazy to me how many people just really want a V8. Lol

No, the current motor might not have the reliability track record (yet) that the 4.6 and 5.7 had, but it destroys them both in every single other category.
    - more hp
    - WAY more torque
    - significantly better fuel economy

The bottom end instant power of the TTV6 is insane compared to the V8.

    I’m still getting ~19mpg combined on 35’s.
I couldn’t even get 17 combined in my 2017 Tundra with factory tire size.

Edit: Oh and the new transmission is so damn smooth in delivering the power.

Economy will be way better on the 2022, although that doesnt usually offset the money you are gunna have to spend to buy it so its kind of a silly reason to justify the purchase.

Power will be on a different planet. The 4.6L is ok, but the TTV6 will just destroy it, especially at low RPM. I've got a 4.6L in my Lexus GX and its just adequate in a vehicle this heavy, especially if you tow.

V8's are going the way of the dodo in 1/2 ton trucks for the most part. I think the only one that is still going to be pushing them is GM, but GM does have a turbo'd 4 cylinder and a 3.0L diesel in the Silverado 1500. So even they are recognizing there needs to be something other than V8's in their lineup. Ford sells mostly TTV6's, Ram is going to an inline 6 turbo, and now Toyota is only TTV6.

I don't find it crazy at all. For me, it's the sound of a V8. That deep rumble is what I grew up with and have always associated with what a truck is supposed to sound like.

That said, from the test drive I got to do, the comments I've read on this forum, and all the reviews I've read/watched I have no doubts that the exhaust sound is the only thing that I'll miss.

Seems kind of strange to not want a better engine because the exhaust isn’t quite as deep, but to each their own.

Love to hear what qualified as “excellent” fuel economy on your 2001, which I presume was the 4.7L V8. Also what is “Terrible” fuel mileage on your 2013?

I agree, but there is a market for it. Ford still sells a bunch of F150's with the 5.0 even though their 3.5 has more torque, towing capacity, and better mpg.

That exhaust sound is nice if you are just driving around but once you have a trailer hooked up it can get kinda annoying when you are going up and down hills and reving the engine. I really like the TTV6 because its super quiet under load. Just a light hum.

A bunch is probably a bit of an over statement. Last I heard they were nearly 70% Ecoboost and the rest was split between the 3.0 diesel, 5.0 and base V6.

Here in Utah a 5.0 is hard to find. I was at the dealer the other day for a recall and the sales dude I was talking to specifically pointed to an F150 in the lot and told me it was one of the very rare 5.0's and that they almost never see them.

Not saying I’d go one way or another but I remembered seeing this video and found it interesting. The Ford mechanics at this dealership overwhelmingly picked the 5.0 in 2020 anyway. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j9cvCTxOlHs

I thought that black Supercrew at 1:41 was my truck!

They seem to see less in for repairs because they sell 1/3 as many. Also, if you are making big power, the 5.0 with a whipple is the way. 800 whp without much effort. So all those Supercharger guys probably do prefer the 5.0. An 800 whp 3.5L Ecoboost is a fully built engine with big turbos and fueling upgrades and its probably losing some of its street manners trying to spool those turbos. But how many people are really building 800 whp trucks.

I 100% agree with the 4th guy that the 2.7L is the best engine in the F150. Not the most powerful, but the best all around motor. Very efficient, still very torquey/powerful, and pretty reliable. For your normal truck buyer who might occasionally tow, its a very good option.

That was a good video. I liked the last answer. "I'm a loud redneck and like loud pipes."

Back to the topic for the OP. I can't add much since I haven't received my truck, but I wouldn't worry about the lack of a V8. On my test drive I was just handed the keys to one of the salesmans personal truck and told to go have fun. I made a 15 mile loop and came back grinning from ear to ear. I loved the torque in that truck.

I had a '12 Tundra CrewMax with the 5.7 and the gas mileage was horrible (10-15 mpg). I have co workers who've purchased the new '22 and it's a mixed bag. Some are getting around 15-17mpg's, while others are getting 17-20mpg. To me, the cost of a new one is not enough to justify a few more miles per gallon. If it was as good as Ford's new PowerBoost hybrid (non towing mpg's in the upper 20's to low 30's), then I'd say it's worth the money.

If you want a throatier sound out of your 4.6 change the exhaust. The 4.6 is a good engine, and you can dial it in to make it sound the way you want to.

I just bought an '05 Tundra because I missed mine, and I needed a reliable truck. I figure I'll give Toyota a few years to dial in the new engines, then I might consider a new Tundra (once all the initial bugs are worked out).

    Good luck on your decision.

The 5.0 has greater long term reliability and a higher payload capacity over the ecoBoost engines--which is why many Ford mechanics say they'd buy the truck with that engine. I had a work truck that was a 2014 F150 with the 5.0 and it was a great truck.

I'm one of the 22's that has only averaged 15.5 in the 670 miles since purchased... I dont hammer down much, if any, and have a fairly even split of in town and highway... Not sure why I see the low low end, but it is what it is. I have never once in my life purchased a truck, of any kind, with mpgs on my mind haha...

Love my V8 but hard to say that 22’ is not a better vehicle. Definitely would be nice if the MPG was better but you can’t have it all. I will probably wait for the refresh.

I hear that. Most of us don't purchase trucks for the mpg's, unless they are daily drivers. If someone wants a truck as a daily and wants great gas mileage, get an F150 with the 2.7L ecoBoost. If you want a long term reliable truck, get a Toyota. :)

I had a 14 SR5 as a daily driver before this truck haha... Well I should say up until about 3 years ago when my job relocated to the building next to my wife's... Now our daily commute is in her Corolla, but it's only a matter of time until the mileage on that gets out of hand and the 22 Limited is tagged back in for daily duty...

Mileage out of hand? In a Corolla? Does not compute.

I don’t know why fuel economy seems to vary so much.
For me, the TTV6 fuel mileage is way better by a long shot.
In my 2017 Tundra I was lucky to see 16 combined on factory tires.
My 22 was getting ~21 combined with factory tires. Still getting ~19 combined with 35’s.

For me it's about what I can afford. $60k plus sales tax, plus registration, plus comprehensive insurance, I can't afford that. We have a used '19 5.7 bought for $36k and now pushing 100k miles, that will have to work for us.

haha that's what I'm hoping for! its a 16 and sitting at 105,000 miles so far... Haven't had any major issues as of yet (knock on wood)... She could do a better job taking care of it in regards to scratches and dings, but my main concern is the CVT trans... I know absolutely nothing about them, other than a bunch of hearsay online in regards to the longevity of them... I'd really like for it to last at least the 3 years it'll take for the truck note to disappear... Anything beyond that is a bonus... Who knows, maybe my 8 year old will be driving it to school down the road...

I'm not sure either... I'm sitting at 15.5 combined, which is apparently shit compared to many others here... When my 3/1 and 35s go on soon, I'll likely be back to my old 14 SR5 numbers... it got 13-14 regularly haha...

Fuel Economy mostly varies by driving habits. Some people like to claim “driving like a saint” but that’s subjective. Anyone can learn economical driving habits and improve their mileage.

I have pretty much the truck you describe . SR5 Dbl Cab with TRD premium off road package and LOVE IT. I am coming off of an '04 4.7L V8 which was great for my needs and had lots of power and speed and never lacked even towing or passing up hills. But this new truck is next level. It has so much get up and go and the transmission is so smooth. I barely press the gas pedal and it accelerates so fast and smooth. It pushes you you back into your seat as the truck jumps forward. It makes driving and passing so easy. My old truck had nowhere near that kind of pop. Plus the ride is great on the new coil spring rear suspension and the technology upgrades are fantastic. As far as gas mileage I am still running the stock tires and it's showing 18.1 combined after 4,000 miles which better than my old truck but not exactly the '19 that is being promoted. All in all I love the truck. Go get one!

This is true but its like 30 lbs of payload different and some of that can be attributed to the fact that the 3.5L comes standard with the 9.75" axle. The 5.0 comes with the 8.8 by default and only gets the 9.75 with certain options.
