38FCFA78-8426-49C2-9E90-4C075A9D26D5.jpg I bought a 2018 Tundra 1794 to replace a 2012 4Runner a few weeks ago. Loved the 4R dearly, but after dragging around a 14’ single axle trailer and a CanAm Defender Max every weekend hunting for a year, I needed something a little stronger.

Power for DAYS. The load with gear and fuel is around 3,100 lbs. I sagged about an inch in the back. I wasn’t sure how to use gearing and tow/haul so I did a few experiments. Yesterday coming down to my folks house I drove into a 25mph headwind the entire trip. I left it in D with tow/haul on and just let the transmission figure itself out. The wind was strong and kept me in 5th gear the whole time.

In any event. This is what driving 75mph into a 25mph headwind towing a 3,000 load looks like. On the way back I should have a tail wind and am hoping for something closer to 10mpg.

I love this truck. I love the power, love the sound and the ride is incredibly comfortable. I’m the happiest guy in the world, wife could have definitely chose a worse 11year anniversary gift for me a few weeks ago!

That is good going 75mph in to a headwind. I think Toyota recommends 55mph while towing. I’ve found anything over 60mph and MPG drops fast. They also recommend towing in S5.

I tow a 2500lb pop up camper, hit tow haul and use s5 or s4 on long runs, stick to 65mph and generally get 15-17mpg. Like my 4runner, it seems 60-65 mph is the sweet spot with the best towing MPG

I towed the tiniest UHaul I have ever seen with a new Sequoia in December for 1500 miles to Montana and along that route we had up to 80 mph winds at times and 40 or so most of the time through Wyoming and Montana.
Driving there if you are not going 80 or so other drivers and police will run you over and I was getting about 8-9 mpg on that trip.
If I back it down to 65 I cold get in the 15 mpg range but then I was getting flashed and honked at constantly too.

    YMMV literally.

Nice, guys. I didn’t buy a Tundra for gas mileage so I really don’t care if I get 7mpg or 15mpg towing. I just want to get there doing the speed limit comfortably, every single time. There isn’t a truck on the market that can do it better IMO.

4C3491C9-279E-4943-AD3C-0A2FA5F795ED.jpg Update: Same trip in reverse, no headwind. 75mph.

I actually stopped and weighed because I never have and was curious. SxS + Trailer was right at 3,075 lbs.

In other news, my trailer is officially nearly at max. Now that I’ve upgraded tow vehicles I may be looking at a tandem or enclosed trailer this summer ...

That's pretty good for that speed and load.

I’m pleased! Here’s what it looks like loaded and what my situation is. I think the gate of my trailer acts like a sail in the wind which doesn’t help... but what can you do?

Looks about right, I have towed a 5500 pound tractor from my place in Buffalo TX to Abilene TX several times, Not flat and not to hilly, averaged about 6.9-7.5 MPH running 65-75 in S 4&5. Truck had lots of power and felt confident the whole trip.
