This is what the underneath looks like on a 68k mile Tundra RW

I saw a new listing for a 2010 Toyota Tundra Rock Warrior and immediately inquired about it. This is a one owner truck that was recently traded in on a new Toyota and only has 68k miles on it. Well, this is what the underneath of this 68k mile truck looks like! Wow! Obviously, I passed on this one too. I'm now 0 for 3 on finding a clean 2010+ Tundra. I think i'll look at one more truck and if that one doesn't work out, then i'll move on to another brand.

I have to give props to the salesman and the selling dealer for being totally transparent with me on the condition of this truck! I wish more dealers were as honest as them! Too bad this one didn't work out. Anyways, buying a used CLEAN Tundra is more difficult than I had originally thought!

To be fair, this one would be considered mint compared to the first two I looked at. :eek2:

Anyone who buys their used Tundra sight on seen has got guts! Because you could end up with something like this!

I never thought in a million years that such a low mileage truck could look this bad underneath! I am absolutely blown away!

Yep! It sure is. The exhaust is pretty rotten and is due for replacement.

Well, you could negotiate... That is rusty, but it looks like surface rust and no actual damage beyond the exhaust and probably the exhaust heat shields and maybe the parking brake. Offer $5000 off list and see what they say. You can brush most of that rust off and put POR15 over it and it will look fabulous for many years to come.

Where are you located. Looks pretty typical for a 10 year old New England truck. In fact that looks typical for a 5 year old New England truck. The salt they use on the roads in winter is brutal. Traded my 2017 Silverado in last April. It wasn’t far behind that tundra. I’ve since gone to NH oil undercoating and that seems to really help.

I'm located in Michigan and we use quite a bit of salt on the roads as well. I also looked at a 2016 or 2017 F150 with 83k miles on it about a month ago and the frame looked almost new! I don't want to get into a brand debate, but that was my observation. I might just end up with a F150 anyways, if I do, i'll post pictures of the underside.

I'm more confused that the guy named DIY Dan is rating the rust on the frame vs the truck's mileage, as opposed to age.

That truck does look pretty terrible.

My son just bought an 08 with 150k in Iowa and it is in damn good shape. Only a bit of rust on the frame, original everything. Think you’ve just been unlucky. Need to find one someone actually took care of.
Just saw an 07 with 96k here in Wisco, didn’t go look but it looked in good shape as well.

For a 10 year old truck from Michigan, that truck looks perfectly fine. Surface rust, can be cleaned up and undercoated
You will not find ANY 10 yr old truck from ANY manufacturer from the rust belt in better condition unless it was never driven in salt and snow. Even trucks that are undercoated only have the frame protected, cant protect hot exhaust pipes.

Politely disagree. My sons 08 was driven every winter for last 12 years, just as much salt in Iowa and it looks like new compared to that.

Only if this truck was a crewmax. I'd take advantage of those surface rust.. and exhaust repair as a bargaining chip. I am sure that dealer low balled the hell out on the trade also.
2010 with 68K is 6.8/ per year that sound like someone kept that truck for leisure use rather than actual truck use. Since @DIYDanCars will pass on this what dealership was this truck in

You would think they would at least try to remove the existing salt crust off of the rust crust................

It’s hard to compare two vehicles from the same area when we have zero idea how their owners took care of them (or didn’t take care of them).

My old 2012 4Runner was from the Chicago area and it looked new underneath when I got it with 72k in 2017. I’m assuming they treated it with fluid film or Amsoil HDMP.

I mean even if you just rinsed the salt off underneath it would look light years better over time than doing nothing.

A little rusty, but certainly far worse has been posted here.

None of the ones I looked at here in the south had any rust to speak of. The one I ended up buying had body dings and imperfect paint for sure, but getting way under it to look at the bolts that mount the bed, which seem to be a problem area where issues start, absolutely nothing consequential that I can see, just extremely minor surface rust here and there.
Our roads maybe get salted once a year. As mentioned it's more about age and use than mileage.

Someone will probably get a good deal on that one if they can get the dealer down some and are willing to clean it up.

For the first 6 or 7 years I used my 2000 Tundra daily. It saw the worst the road crews had to offer and about 10 years Toyota replaced the frame. Since I was rarely using it I did some work to it, like replacing the front rotors and exhaust. I figured with a new frame and no longer seeing any real winter use it should last a lifetime. It had around 130k so it still had lots of life in the engine. Over the next few years I would snow blow around it but didn't move it so there was always a pile of snow up against it. About 5 years ago it failed inspection. The rocker panels had rusted away. Also the rear axle rusted (the thin cover over the ring and pinion gears) rusted to the point it was leaking.

Just because that truck has low miles doesn't mean much. I figure when the snow melted under the truck and the snow up against it prevented wind from drying it out. I've heard parking on a cement surface is even worse than gravel as the water can't seep into the ground. Over all it doesn't look too bad. I don't think the OP is going to find much better unless he sets his sights about 1000 south. That's what I did and my 07 still has the numbers the factory painted on the frame. 3 years of very light use in the winter and not allowing snow to build up around the truck and it still looks almost new.

Good luck with the Ford. They last a little longer due to the frame being thicker steel but junkyards are full of them. Rarely do I see one more than 10 years old on the road around here.
