Just put a new lift in my 2012 DC. 3.5" coilover (elka) with JBA UCA and the elka rear shock with resi and a toytec shackle.

Literally the day everything is in and she's road ready and I stumble across the forums talking about steering rack failures after lifts... And of course I'm now convinced that mine will fail sooner rather than later and I'm fucked.

    For God's sake....

Meh. The stress goes away and turns into anger and resentment after the stuff you read about actually happens to your rig. :stirthepot::anonymous:

Dont worry about the rack. Worry about how broke you will be after you are on here a while and see all the other mods you can do.....

Dont worry I'm eye balling a new light bar and just read a post about someone toasting their truck by grounding the power wire by accident.

Yep, right there with ya OP. Mine's been leveled about two weeks and I've suddenly developed canine ears. I hear every little click, knock, and grinding sound. Thankfully, most of the strange sounds I hear are other people's cars around me. I'm hoping that gets better as time goes by.

You’ll know if it’s going out. Or at least I did. Started making noises and ps pump smoked sometimes when turned full lock. Started about 6 months before it finally broke. Just don’t turn full lock and you won’t put as much force on it.

I’m gonna start by knocking on some wood, but I’ve been lifted for 100k including a bunch of off-roading and I still have my original rack.

How much and what kind of lift? Seems like the issue is more prevalent in bracket lifts but I see plenty of mention about them with just level kits as well. One thing I feel like I have to my advantage is factory wheels and I'm not going to be running super wide or heavy tire (34.8x11.8).

As soon as I get time I'm going to pull my coilovers off and lower the ride height about 3/4" (from 3.5" to 2.75") I think this will help too.

Yup , it's very nerve racking , reading about problems , but it all comes with the territory. You bought a great truck , not for mileage or to repair , just to BUILD AND HAVE FUN , ALL ELSE IS THE SAME WITH ANY MOD ON ANY TRUCK. JUST ENJOY THE RIDE. Oh ya and fix it if it needs it.

I wouldn't be so paranoid.Anything can breakdown. Enjoy your truck and fix what it needs when it needs it.The good thing is you bought a Toyota and that break down doesn't happen very often!

Hell a person can get hit by a car crossing the street doesn't mean I'm not going to cross the street.
My trucks been lifted better than half of its life and I would say it's just a matter of luck whether yours going to break or not.

In many ways, reading about vehicle problems on a forum is like going to a hospital and seeing sick people there.

IMHO, the best thing you can do for your steering rack is always try to be moving, even slowly, when steering. If you’ve ever driven a vehicle with manual steering you’ll know why.

My pick up is paid for so ultimately fixing most of this stuff if it breaks is cheaper than a new pick up. It's just a pain when things go wrong because it always happens at the worst time in the worst place. Called my local shop out of curiousity and they said they've done a few steering racks on Tundras. They drop it out the bottom and avoid pulling the motor so that's refreshing that they're aware and know whats' going on. quoted me about 2k to replace the rack. Much more reasonable than I thought. THey also told me theyve done some CV work as well. They recommend a CV axle from Napa because they feel its better than the OEM and they've seen fewer issues with it....whatever thats worth. Quoted me 900-1000 for that job. for that kind of money I could have both need replacement in the same year and it would still be less than buying a new truck. Cross my fingers and knock on every piece of wood I see that I'm just worrying about an issue I'll never see.

no doubt. but I've broken my skid plate, fuel tank skid plate, bent my running board brackets, and put a dent in the bottom of my front bumper. I'm not going to stop driving to those places because something might break...so getting more clearance was fairly logical to avoid something worse getting broken. Then again, I was not aware that a lift itself introduces a plethora of other potential issues...but what are my other options?

If you bend up enough stuff you'll have the clearance without a lift! :)

I’m sitting around 3 in the front and 2 in the back on 35s. Definitely can add more stress to them. I try to stay aware of where I’m at while turning and avoid a hard full lock as much as possible, especially while I’m offroad.

That was a solution I heard from friends back in the 1960's, "Just turn the radio up when you think you hear something."
