Thinking of Selling my Calvary Blue 4R Pro for a Tundra Pro or Sierra AT4

Long story short, I never even considered a 4R for myself. After losing our vehicles in a house fire, I got my wife a white 4R Pro and I liked it so much, that I got a Calvary Blue. I absolutely love my Pro. I've owned a bunch of sports/muscle cars and many trucks, but my 4R is currently my favorite.

I am a big guy (6'8" and 350 lbs.), but the 4R fits me surprisingly well, although a full size truck would definitely offer more room and comfort. I also find myself needing a truck bed for miscellaneous projects, especially with just moving back into the house.

Although I "think" I need a truck, I cannot help wondering if I will regret letting my 4R Pro go. I have a couple of reasons. At 6'8", I absolutely will not comfortably fit with a sunroof, which all new 4R Pros now have. If I regret my decision, I cannot just go out and buy a new one. And the color, the color has really grown on me. I've received more complements on my Calvary Blue 4R, than all of my muscle cars and other vehicles combined.

I'm not really sure why I like my 4R so much. I am definitely not a Pro snob, but knowing that less Pros where produced and they stand out a little more from every other 4R, probably has something to do with it. I'm sure the color also has something to do with it. I know it sounds stupid, but I like having a vehicle that stands out from everything else.

If I did let the 4R go, it would most likely be for a Tundra Pro or Sierra AT4. Up until the fire, I was a loyal GM customer, so I know what I'm getting into. The Tundra Pro seems like a great truck, although dated, but I don't know if my judgment on the Tundra is only carried over from the 4R.

To further complicate things, there is talk of a complete redesign for the 2021 Tundra with no V8 option. I would imagine, a 4R redesign is not far out either.

Anyone regret going from a 4R to Tundra? Should I just get a trailer and call it a day? Or should I go with a Tundra or AT4?

It all comes down to what you like. I have a 2015 Tacoma 4door and a 2018 tundra crew max. If you made me sell one I'd keep the tundra. I love the taco but the tundra is so much more truck and so much more comfortable that it's no contest. The gas mileage is worse but it is a truck. Trucks burn gas. The tundra is smooth and quiet inside and the taco is less refined. I like the tundra because of it's old design engine that doesn't drop cylinders or have a super charger. Mine has the camshaft tower seal leak but the dealer is aware and it will get fixed before the warranty expires. I had a sequoia before the tundra and I prefer the tundra big time. Once you are a truck guy a SUV never seems to fit your needs. All that being said I'm not selling the last of the second gen tacos. That truck is bulletproof and owes me nothing.

I myself use to be a Ch&&y guy but one day after having spent 900 dollars and when I was a mile from the dealer light came on. Drove back to dealer and something with the gas tank vent and it was lots of money and they needed it for a couple of days. Was very pissed so I drove out of the dealer hung a left and went a quarter mile and pulled into a Toyota place and haven’t looked back and that was many many years ago!! Those others just don’t haul or tow like a tundra and at the time I had a small boat and we had troubles towing that. Go get a Tundra use it and enjoy it! I don’t think you would be unhappy??!!! They have massive amounts of room in them these days!!:) Great power too.

If you are going 4 wheeling, the 4 Runner is the better choice but other than that, the Tundra would be my choice.

You have 2 of the same now.

If you get rid of one 4R and get a PRO Tundra, now you have the best of both!

I switched from a 15 Trial to my Tundra(obviously). I feel the 4R needed like 60 more HP and the nose dive was a bit much. They do ride very comfortably though. I loved what the 4Runner represented and the capability and potential, but I think deep down, I am a truck guy, which is crazy because I have access to trailers if I needed them. I also had a 09 Tacoma before the 4R and I regretted getting rid of the Tacoma. I do miss the 4R, and the Tundra is way overkill for my needs, but being 6'5" with a growing family, the Tundra made more sense. I got the platinum and any time we take it, I am amazed at how comfortable it is.

I will say, I do still look at every 4R that drives past and even when I took my Tundra in for service the other day, I had to go look at the 4R PRO they had on the lot.

A small utility trailer might be a good investment for all that 'around the house' stuff if you keep the 4R.

If you decide to get a Tundra, you can always get a Calvary Blue one with a sunroof! It wont be a Pro though in that color.

Yeah, and that's another issue... wait for the 2020 with smart key, push button start, AppleCare play, etc... or the 2021, which may not even have a V8 option, but possible a TT V6 at 30 mpg. Anyone know if the 2021 will have a body redesign?

I have a 2017 Tundra and got the wife an 18 4runner. If I was you I would keep the 4runner and get a trailer. Don't think about it anymore.

Th 4runner is a way better daily driver vehicle.

I bought the wife an SR5 4x4 4Runner a couple of years ago. I am 6'3" and weigh 205 and it is uncomfortable to drive for me. Just feels more cramped than I like. The Tundra is much more comfortable...

or lease a 2020 pro Tundra so you have the option in 3 years to return it and get the newer generation or just pay off the current lease and own the 2020.

Gm trucks aren’t what they used to be imo. Tundra pro is a great reliable truck. Easy choice

I have a 2015 crew max and came from a 2014 4runner that was slightly lifted (Bilsteins, 285 tires, etc). I himmed and hawwed for 6 months about getting a Tundra and am glad that I did. The 4runner lacks about 50Hp but is dead reliable and will last forever- Great Japanese build quality. I feel like the Tundra has more of an "American Toyota - Camry, minivan, etc" build quality but is still very solid and lots of drive line parts are basically overbuilt. The 5.7 V8 is pure music compared to the 4.0L in the 4runner and it can actually merge onto the freeway. I'm not super tall but am 6'1" 230lbs and the Tundra is much more comfy and roomy. The 4runner seat bottoms are too short and the floor is too high. The fact that you already have a 4runner makes it easy for me to say, get a Tundra.

It's hard not to resist the AT4 with the 6.2L engine.
The new body style looks sharp and it has significantly more options.

Just sayin'...I'd only consider the AT4 with the 6.2L...

What size/type of tires on the white Pro? I like the stance of your white one. My wife and I bought a cavalry blue 4R for her and a tundra for me. She started with a 4x2 limited and wanted to be able to off-road after going with me. She loves the PRO over the limited and like you said she is always getting compliments.

I would say that if you want to tow or haul frequently a pickup would be the better choice; otherwise just stick with the 4Runner.

I had a 2017 4R TRDP in Cement...and I loved it. The color was probably the best part. The incredibly slow acceleration was the worst.

Traded it to a Toyota dealer towards a used Tundra TRDP also in Cement. The interior in the Tundra is way better, except for the cheap steering wheel they used. Replaced it with a 4R steering wheel and that fixed it. Way faster than the 4R. Back seats are way bigger, too. So glad I made the switch.

First off I’m also 6’8 and 360lbs, I fit nicely in my tundra CM limited, I even have 3 car seats in back with no problems. And as far as I keep hearing the ‘21 will be a total redesign with another possible engine option....regardless I love my tundra.

I have a 17 Tundra and my wife has a 16 T4R. Both are great vehicles and better in certain areas than the other. For me I wouldn’t trade my Tundra for the 4Runner. I use my truck for hauling and towing all the time. I’m 6’1” 220 and I feel cramped in the 4Runner after driving my truck. You will love the extra power and the extra space. If your wife is gonna keep her 4Runner then you still will have the best of both worlds. 4652AD16-8C08-4C40-B6A9-5C4934ED7FEC.jpg

I’m actually contemplating getting a 2020 4R Pro. Not sold on going from a full size to that though. I think I’d miss the 5.7 the most. If I don’t do that I’m likely waiting for the 2021 or like you looking at an AT4. I like my Yotas but the AT4’s are sweet. Naturally with the 6.2. Just not sure if I want to pay that much for my next vehicle.
