Anyone survived the Rubicon Trail in a Tundra? If so, what was your setup (how much lift, tire size, under body protection, doable without lockers, etc)? What would you have changed about your setup knowing what you know now? Did you do it yourself or pay a guide/company to spot for you? Other stuff to know?

I can't get tackling this out of my head. And it doesn't help having Jeep buddies constantly nagging me about it... one thing I know right off the bat given my experience with my 3gen off road so far is that transmission cooling would need to be addressed.

Ultimately I think I'll take the Tundra to the trail head, park it, and jump in the passenger seat of a buddy's Jeep. Buuuuttt...

    Let's discuss.

I haven't done it but I know someone who has, twice. He's a friend of @renosauce
and he did it in a LT first gen. It's 1 of 6 trials in the Fun Treks book that I don't think I'll ever try in my 3rd gen.

I would also be worried about bumpers, both front and back, those puppies are coming off. Wheelbase is really long too, you'd probably just end up with your buddies nagging you about the time you fucked your truck up. It a truck man, there's a lot of things it does great, some it doesn't

Impossible in a 2nd or 3rd gen. Wheelbase is just too long. Unless you had like 50” tires.

An otherwise stock 5th gen 4Runner with sliders and AT tires made it. I’d love to see a Tundra do it. You’d need armor, tires, and a lift for sure with that wheelbase.

I’d also love to see a Tundra do Black Bear Pass! Cmon, forum!! Who’s crazy enough?!?!

Remember that group of vehicles going on the Rubicon when we were going up to Buck Lake? It was like a stock Sequoia and a spacer left Tacoma or something like that. I wonder if they are still there or were able to turn around and get out.
I know that most of the big obstacles have bypasses, so I wonder if we could do the fake Rubicon by taking all the bypasses or if there are actually spots that we couldn't get past.

i probably won't happen this year.
still a ton of snow and massive avalanche mess.
    huge boulders on the trail
    rock slides

    i just ran it.
as of now the hair line past the steps are undoable on 4 wheels. in my opinnion

snow will probably come before it melts

not sure if the can get a plow on that one

i was thinking the same about the bypasses. Never been to the trail and I don’t own anything smaller than the tundy, but would love to see the views which I’m sure are amazing. Would also like to see if I could do some of the easier obstacles if there are any. I could beat my truck like it owes me money but she’s still in great shape. Maybe when she’s 10 years old I’ll take it through the trail. I’ve done some sketchy shit in the truck where even I was surprised that she fit. But the rubicon is no joke. So people say. Lol

I think we could get through most of it. What concerns me are obstacles like this one. No bypass. I don’t think we can physically fit through.

I just need to ride shotgun once with a truck that can actually make it. Maybe get Ed to try. Then we’ll know for sure.

Well, I just sent a message to a friend that has, I believe, led a group of Hummers through the Rubicon. We'll see what he says.

And one last thing... it's a one way trail. Imagine if we had to turn around. All those fucking jeep assholes will ridicule us while we're going backwards. Like seeing the idiot on the ski lift going back down the mountain because he didn't know how to get off at the top of the mountain.

CO. It’s a steep and crazy county road with some hairpin switchbacks. Everyone says a Tundra can’t do it because it’s full size, but there’s a video on YouTube of a guy in an older Dodge Ram driving it like it’s no big deal.

I've ridden it on my MTB (I live in Durango) and that hairpin would be gnarly as hell in a Tundra, with some serious pucker-factor given the "landscape."

If anyone tries it I'd ride behind for support :)

I can't get this out of my head.

I know there are guided tour groups you can hire to handle the spotting, support, overnight camping and cooking... but they seem Jeep specific. Hell, I might send one of them an email anyway.
