It goes without saying that certain things can be pretty distracting when you're driving - talking on a cell phone, kids kicking the back of your seat...

What might be less obvious are some of the in-car gadgets found in many modern cars. Satellite navigation systems, touch-screen climate control systems and complicated in-car audio systems can all result in drivers spending a little too much time with their eyes and minds off the road.

Explains the newer phenomenon of sudden lane change without warning syndrome witnessed on the roads these days.

Example: Driving down a multi-lane road. Car in front of you in adjacent lane traveling in same direction driving slower than speed limit suddenly jerks into your lane right in front of you closing in doing the speed limit. Sometimes they do a double lane shift with no warning/turn signals.

When you get around them you observe they are talking ‘hands free’ on the phone. Who knows what else is going on inside their vehicle?

I was following a lady the other day, and she missed two different light changes because she was fiddling with her touch screen. She was completely self absorbed and oblivious to all other vehicles around her... I drove around her at the 3rd light.

Some controls in a vehicle should always be tactile such as radio and temp controls. You shouldn't have to look at a screen to make an adjustment. That is no different than looking at your phone to make a call.
