    Hey,

I own a 2003 Tundra, 4.0, 6 Cylinder, who just left the doctor's office with her squeaky belts replaced.

However, the mechanic said that a bolt has broken on (I'm not a car guy so bear with me here) "The alternator adjustment pulley". The truck is currently running because "We put a prybar under the alternator, and lifted it up, then tightened everything down - just like an 'oldskool' car". I was assured that there was no chance of excess wear or random explosions in my future if I continued to use the truck. However, I want it fixed right - and my mechanic says he is having a terrible time finding the bolt. So here I am.

I've attached a picture (or tried too - is there a post count required before you can post pictures?) of the offending piece.

If the picture doesn't post... it is an assembly made up of 2 bolts. The longer of the 2 bolts has a TORX head, and threads into the head of the smaller of the 2 bolts, so that they form a right angle. The head of the smaller bolt is knurled, and the threads of the smaller bolt meet with a flanged nut.

Scouring the internet I've seen similar pictures going by names of:

    Alternator Adjustment Bolt
    Idler Pulley Bolt
    Tensioner Bolt
    Alternator Tensioner Bolt
    Belt Tensioner Pulley bolt
    Drive Belt Tensioner Bolt

Can ya'll guide me to the right name for this thing? or Better yet where I can buy one? I'd LOVE an OEM replacement, even if it costs more than an aftermarket that does the same thing, but I'm open to all options...

Looks as if mechanic used zero penetrant on bolt. Small rust inside it is likely reason it broke. Seized up in the adjuster. Plier marks on left hand side of it by where the bolt head broke off is further evidence

I thought the 6cyl 4.0 was in the 2005-2006 models. Try searching for a truck with year model 2005 when searching for parts.

Perhaps @BubbaW or @empty_lord would be able to help you out using some google-fu.

Listen, this may be a really dumb question, but are you positive it's not the 3.4L?

Does it look like the below picture? (Picture A)
    20200718_202918.jpg

Or this picture below? (Picture B)

Same question, the 2003 brochure and various online parts speak of 3.4 V6 or 4.7 V8. Personally I’d take that broken bolt out, measure link of broke bolt, take it and rectangular bolt ?? to a hardware store. Should have no problem finding mm size bolt until you find OEM bolt if that’s desired !

Bleh! You guys are probably right about the 3.4... here's my engine. I'm sorry for the confusion. Its definitely the V6.

I would measure and go to the hardware store, but after taking the picture he junked the parts.... I know this sounds really bad, but I've been going to this guy for over a decade and a half, and this is the first problem I've had.

Would this be easier if I got a whole assembly of some sort?

I sorta stuck my head in the engine bay when I took that picture a few minutes ago, and didnt see this part in there but I probably wasnt looking in the right place...

It wouldn't hurt. Tensioners do wear out over time.

It's a shame your mechanic dude didn't use any wd-40 or other penetrant. That broken bolt could have probably been easily removed with some lube, and heat.

Patrick, ask the mechanic dude to dig through his shit can!
