I searched and couldn’t find a post about this so I thought I’d do it as I just watched it this morning. It’s sort of a hot topic and they addressed it on the Ike gauntlet vs a Silverado. not terribly conclusive...but it’s something

Curious if their temp was converter or pan

EDIT: I am gonna assume that was converter temp.

I would like to see how an older tundra with the transmission cooler does.

I don't recall if they used S4 or S5 and tow haul mode either, which would help as well.

TFL is about as reliable as motorbiscuit or any of those other random websites. Their conclusion that the tranny is fine because no warning lights came on and "the truck didn't pull back power" (???) is about as shallow of a basis as you can get.

    Thanks for your opinion.

They did a tough towing challenge and it didn’t go into limp mode or blow up or go to 300 degrees, that’s the point of the test. The truck with the tranny cooler stayed cooler, showing that it helps but maybe isn’t needed.

Did anyone actually damage their transmission by towing?

Tundra went from 208 to 246 with no aux cooler. Trail boss went 187 to 214 with an aux cooler.

There is already a thread about this video.

They originally put up a video where they both were highly concerned about the Tundra's high temperature. They found it not acceptable.

Toyota contacted them, they took it down, they claimed it was released before being fully edited.

New version, this one, replaces their concern with the comments from Toyota.

I was one of the lucky ones to see both videos.

247* pan temp is pretty warm...

Interesting enough, the Vail Pass tow test is a really good one, but....

The highest ambient temperature has been in the low 70’s at the summit. Makes me wonder how the temps will be on other passes that can see 90+* temps.

Agree. I normally like TFL Truck, but their lack of transparency discredits them and their analysis.

Then the SAE J2807 test would be considered useless as well.

Like I said on the first post, it’s a bad video. The “test” was only 9 miles and the weather is snowy. Let’s see how a new Tundra does in Arizona, 200 mile drive, in the summer.

    No.

Fact 1: They put out a video and they were highly concerned about the temperatures. There were no comments from Toyota included in the video.
Fact 2: They pulled that video saying it wasn't finished editing.
Fact 3: They put out a replacement video that removed all expressed concerns about the temperatures. Comments from Toyota about the seen temperatures being normal were inserted.

As I said elsewhere, these testers are not engineers and Toyota's input is to be more trusted, of course.

That said, I feel they were deceptive in why they removed the video so they can't be trusted to be impartial, in my opinion.

Disturbing, but not surprising. Their reviews have been biased, and skewed by corporate influence for as long as I can remember.

Not sure how you concluded from my statement---which is regarding TFL testing not comparing the Tundra to the previous externally cooled transmission variants, or lack of vehicle telemetry, or lack of stating vehicle settings, let alone lack of long term survivability of the transmission (albeit hard to test, but the main worry of people from what I've read)---that a standardized tow test is useless?

Their conclusion is transmission "only" hit 250 degrees so it's fine---that equals me saying towing tests are useless? Okay. If their video is comprehensive enough for you then good for you, or maybe I'm missing the details in the video.

Bold statement above is one if the criteria in the J2807 test. So if you are stating their (TFL) test to be useless, I'm simply carrying over a comment made into another test standard.

And my comment was meant to be a question rather than statement, I thought I used a question mark...seems I didnt.

In that case yes I disagree with that testing standard. I glanced through the J2807 and didn't see anything about safety lights, everything seemed to be braking, acceleration, handling, etc. I didn't see anything in regards to the transmission specifically. Regardless, that seems to be a requirement based on a value that could be arbitrary. Say for instance the transmission is at 399deg and the warning light is set to 400deg for whatever reason (like how the toyota light is 300deg which seems insanely high, but I'm not a transmission engineer). So your tranny light hasn't come on but you're absolutely cooking everything and it wouldn't last for 50 miles at that temperature but the rear covers it for 10 miles up a grade. That doesn't seem right, and based on the bolded statement sounds like a basis for that test?

Whether the new tundra needs a trans cooler is an entirely separate discussion, but when a video is titled to answer that question and there is no direct comparison to anything valid that puts that reviewer in question (and don't get me started on their off-road "tests" lol).

And to wrap up this response, I once pinged the tranny light on my 4runner. Could've been a handful of degrees less and the light wouldn't of come on. For arguments sake let's say that light didn't come on and I let off the gas a minute earlier. That passes that test, that passes TFLs "test", well the fluid was burned to shit and even after replacing it my torque converter went out 2000 miles later. Now obviously that's pretty poor correlation, but is where my viewpoint is coming from. Toyota has a trans cooler for 12(?) years, and showing that the "oh shit you're fucked" light didn't come on so the truck is fine, is not enough to justify removing the cooler. This post wasn't supposed to be this long, just wanted to be thorough :D

Not defending TFL, but they already got banished by Ford, maybe they were afraid of the same thing happening with Toyota?

    FWIW, the warning light comment.

Also, in the other thread I posted an UOA for WS that was used rather well.
