Hi all. I previously had a 15 Toyota tundra platinum that I absolutely loved and threw a lot of money into turning it into my “platinum pro” I changed jobs lost my work truck so was commuting and the 11 to 12 mpg’s just was too much with the gas prices back then so I switched to a 22 F150 Lariat powerboost which I absolutely love especially after putting some 6112 and 5160 BilStein’s all around. The Ford has been very reliable and has never left me stranded. There’s been a couple yearly check engine lights that popped on for various stupid reasons, but nothing earth shattering, and of course the recalls. Furthermore, my reason for jumping to Ford was the look of the new Tundra. Didn’t like the grill
Fast-forward three years later to today, the Tundra has grown on me and I’m actually thinking of pulling the trigger on a 2025 platinum TRD off-road package. This is definitely a want not a need. Two things make me nervous. The Toyota tundra engine and the price of these beloved vehicles now. It’s not that I can’t afford it. It’s do I want to pay that for pretty much a lateral move. This being said I have always been a Toyota tundra fanboy. Just wondering if anybody else had the same dilemma and ended up pulling the trigger? Regrets? Or best decision ever? Thanks for any and all input

I’ll never understand “poor mpg is killing me, so I financed then modded a new $60k truck, and three years later I’m ready to be talked into doing it again”

That said, the Tundra is the only half ton I’d ever even consider.

    @GODZILLA went 2nd gen -> Ford -> 3rd gen

It doesn't matter, history shows you won't have it very long anyway.

if I had proper reasoning ability, I wouldn’t be on a truck forum asking complete strangers for advice. Now would I?

    Lots of stuff!
I went from and Honda to a Tundra to a 3500 HD. And I finally get good mileage! ;)

This is all in the last 5 years!

-May have considered a commuter and kept the 15 Tundra if it was purely MPG reasons. But you probably wanted a new truck, just not the Tundra at this point in time. Can't argue that.
-Financially a horrible decision. Pains me to say keep the Ford; a truck you enjoy, reliable, and never left you stranded. All unknowns with 3G.
-Evaluate your wants vs needs. Your money so spend it however you like :)
-Might consider upgrading with a refresh suspected in 2028. Give it a couple more years. You might make out on likability, reliability, and resale.

OP, it might not matter to you, but the new Tundras depreciate at an alarming rate, especially in the first 2 years.

Personally, I can't imagine trading in a 3 year old truck that you "absolutely love" and has been "very reliable", unless it has abnormally high mileage.

I truly appreciate it. Currently have 37K on the powerboost and wouldn’t you know it? I found an even better job and grabbed 17 Honda Accord for commuting so I’m kicking myself getting rid of the Tundra, but I unfortunately I did not have a crystal ball when getting rid of the platinum.
You’re spot on with everything. as luck would have it, there’s a Toyota dealership on my way to the gym, and I find myself swinging in there and looking at the new inventory of Tundra’s occasionally. Once in a while I’ll find one that’s open sitting in it and imagine I could see myself in this. They even have that new Tundra smell haha. I should probably switch gyms. Hang around in the barbershop long enough you’re liable to get a haircut I’ll probably just keep the F150 for a while longer. See how it holds up and see what the new Tundra looks like in a couple of years once again thanks for the input.

Don’t do it. Think differently and open your mind to other possibilities. Save your money for retirement. How much earlier could you retire? Could you pay off your mortgage sooner if you have one?

Another thought is if you like trading every 3-5 years, get a 25 now and trade again a year or two after the refresh in 28;):spending:

Keep the ford. Financially it’s the right decision and as you said it’s been perfectly reliable for you.

I’ll just say I wouldn’t try to talk you out of it.

Toyota fanboy? Yeah, just do it. You WILL love it.

On the surface of it, it doesn’t make logical sense, but that’s not what we’re really talking about, are we?

    None at this point.
For me there's never been a question when it comes to the Truck I drive.
While I've had a few Fords over the years one being the King Ranch edition which was a very nice truck you just cant beat a Toyota when it comes quality and reliability.
    They just work!!
Used to do a lot of offroading and thats where Toyotas really Shine!!
My FJ would pretty much go wherever you pointed it.
And they hold their value better than a domestic truck.

Here’s my thought on switching from Ford to Toyota. I had a 2020 F150 STX 2.7 with a 3” inch Elka lift on 34”s and Methods 17inch wheels. I had a 2017 STX as well same eco boost engine. I enjoyed the eco boos engine no complaints on that.

I drove it to 38k miles before selling for the tundra. My transmission continued to slip beginning at 30k miles 3 and 5th gear specifically ford said this was normal and I even did a transmission fluid and filter flush with no solving that was my final draw to sell it.

I went with tundra because I think it’s the best looking 1/2 ton out there, the engine is surly a question mark on my 2024 with a June build date. I upgraded significantly in trim and features over the ford I got 8k miles and it’s been great. I’ll add my only hesitation to the tundra was the engine concern. I did buy it during Toyotathon with significant discount on my 1794 trim.

LOL, she might be thinking that if you trade trucks so often, then, what about her? ;-)
