Tailgate Struts - Options / Suggestions?

Shopping for struts and found this:

Any pointers? Is this to work in conjunction with both cables or stand alone part?

Pretty sure that mounts behind the tail light on the driver's side. Someone will come along that knows more.

 

Yes, it is behind the tail light.

 

I am trying to install this part and I am having trouble pushing down the support. Is there a trick to installing the support?

My tailgate support is starting to fail. It seems this thread Crashed & Burned I will be addressing this soon so. Stay tuned

 

They unclip just like any gas strut with a small flat bladed screwdriver. Ten seconds per end?
Easy. If $114 new from Toyota I’d look at wrecking yard for a demolished box. Probably get
used for pretty cheap. I got my pound puppy with no tailgate but the shock was there behind
the drivers taillight. So easy swap unused strut to new-old box which has seen tons of use.

 

It’s stand alone, nothing to do with the cables. Hidden in behind taillight

 

Yes I thought about hitting up a pick & pull to see if there were any 2nd gen tundras. Great point
