My cap got old, the fasteners broke, the plastic around the mounting holes cracked ... so I bought a new OEM one.

Now, when I'm dragging cargo (big heavy cardboard boxes) out of the bed, they catch on the edge of the tailgate cap and try to tear it off. That never used to happen. I have to be very careful, the cap isn't made to stand up to that kind of force.

Anybody know any alternatives? Something that doesn't involve two-side tape or other flimsy attachment?

I kept my factory cap and put a piece of angle iron 1.5"x 2"x.125" over it with a stainless tailgate protector over the whole tailgate and under the angle iron. Ran the screws directly into the plastic clips that hold on the factory cap so no extra holes were needed. Very similar to the above treatment, but much cheaper (aside from the stainless tailgate protector) and it kept the factory cap in place. Works great!
