I have a Platinum and really don't care for the cupholder layout, with one being in front of the other. Does anyone know if it is possible to switch this with the side by side style in some of the other '22 models? It seems the side by side also allows for a lot more storage space in front of the cell phone charger area. If it is possible, where would I get the necessary parts?

Wish I had an answer for you but I find this one of the strangest differences between trims. Like why?

I have an SR5 OR with the side by side and it seems right.

Yea, opinions may vary, but I don't need the little cover that flips up to cover them either. I don't recall this ever being closed in any vehicle I've ever owner. It seems I lose at least 2-3 inches of space just due to this design.

Not only do you lose space, but it also becomes mildly annoying when you can't remember if your cup was in the front or rear holder when you have a passenger. When they're side by side, it's obvious the one on the left is the driver's and the one on the right is the passenger's. I don't think I'd go through the trouble of switching them out, but I too find it weird.

It’s an unwritten rule that the front cup holder is the driver’s spot. Granted I’ve never sat in a 3rd Gen so have no idea how bad the layout is that you guys are up in arms over, haha

the repair manual shows them both, but doesn't give a part # for them, i want to say there is like maybe 2 pieces that need to be changed if switching between the 2 different cup holders
i think the best bet would to be ask @Roman the parts master, i looked on the parts.toyota site, but it has broken images and can't see those pieces in the image that is viewable

Well...I save "up in arms" for the good stuff, this is just a little aggravating, lol. It is actually hard to reach the front holder if the passenger is using the other one; you kind of have to go over the top of the passenger's drink due to the gear shift...first world problems, for sure! Then the amount of space lost so there can be a folding top thing...silly

Here's a little better image of the differences:

    Untitled.jpg

I would think almost everything there would have to be changed out, and even then I'm not sure it would work.

I think this what we need to switch out to make the cup holder a side by side.It look likes it just need a few parts. Next question is how to get the parts and how hard would it be to swap out is the next question

the parts is the easy part (pun), the cost is going to be the big issue since usually going thru the parts dept the cost is usually 2x-3x the cost of the factory cost.

i am guessing $500-$700 to swap to a side by side, which means i can live with the hassle of what i get with the platinum layout. but then again we have a 2018 platinum with the top/bottom layout and once you get use to it, its not really a hassle.

    @Roman,

Are you able to see pricing on the pieces that are needed for the swap?
looks like the following pieces are needed, and the bolts and clip could be reused from the one being taken out, with 1 bolt left over

see post #18 in this thread

from what i can tell you need :

    58280b
    58820b
    33554c
    58825a
    58839a
    58629b
    58822a
    58836b
    55625b

    90467-05171 (11 pieces)
    90167-a0020 (11 pieces)

edit : the above pieces i am not sure what is not needed since you dont actually need all those listed above

and the side by side section parts from 55620E (side by side parts breakout)

    58844
    58945b
    58917
    55618a

    90467-05171 (7 pieces)
    90167-a0020 (6 pieces)

from that listing i dont think thats going to be around $175

    edit :

yeah this is confusing as heck on what is needed and what existing stuff is re-use or adjusted.

58280B, 33554C, 58825A and the clips/screws are all the same between the different models. 58820B is a maybe, though they appear to be the same size/shape in the image. 55620E is the back of the console.

after walking away and coming back...

58822A is a re-use item so i dont think you need to order a new one. its in the break out of the top/bottom break out and the side by side break out next to it. (the bottom pics are for those that already have the side by side and if you need to order new parts)

on the A0020 inserts, you go from 13 down to 11

on the 05171 inserts, you go from 12 down to 11

    58629b - needed

That's the rule in my truck too.

The dinky cup holder way up front, is for misc junk as most drinks are too tall for that one (2019 SR5).

Can someone post a picture of the front back version? I have the side to side version and I am interested to see the difference. I have a 2022 limited, I might be open to a swap

i think you are confusing the break out views. i think the angle of the picture is throwing you off and it looks like a flat piece is there on the right side vs the left side pic and not showing the full depth of the cup

the green piece is shown as break out on right side pic and installed on left side break out

i don't think that i am, the SR5 doesn't have that huge L shaped trim piece, you can see it in the photos above

look at the edges between the 2, the side by side has a right side finished edge, where as the front back has the edge for snapping down that L shaped trim
