I started paddle boarding a few years ago as a fun thing to do outdoors. Only went a few times per year and rented or went on tours. Enjoyed it enough that we purchased two boards. Now we try to go almost every weekend atleast for a few hours.

Just thought this would be a good place to discuss this fun outdoor activity. Here are a few examples of what we can discuss:
    • Recommendations for boards (brand, size, shape)
    • Recommendations for pumps
    • Recommendations for storage
    • Recommendations for transportation
    • Hard vs inflatable
    • Best accessories
    • What to pack for the day
    • SUP Fishing

Boards i purchased are the ROC inflatable paddle boards from Amazon. Good price and saw some good recommendations. Stability is good. Comes with everything you need to get started. Works great with my boys riding on the front of my wifes board and my board. Nice relaxing day on the lake.

    Another rabbit hole of a hobby. @csuviper what kind of SUP are planning to get into? As you posted above with different categories of SUP;

    • Recommendations for boards (brand, size, shape) - Start with a 10'6 and work your way down to a 7'6 Surf SUP...It becomes a different sport with each category
    • Recommendations for pumps- I don't have a use for a pump since my SUP is an Epoxy and custom shaped.
    • Recommendations for storage- Hang it on something sturdy if it's an Epoxy that's easily taken down back up on the rack after a paddle
    • Recommendations for transportation - Yakima/Thule racks are always good
    • Hard vs inflatable- It depends on your personal preference and what style of SUP you want, can't really surf on an inflatable sup, (you can but it would be a log to turn
    • Best accessories- Coiled leash, Carbon fiber paddle (Quik Blade is an awesome paddle, Kialoa), Inflatable belt (in case mandated by the coast guard), Polarized glasses, a good had to cover your head (skin cancer is still a factor). Lastly, some paddles can be taken apart for travel yet sturdy enough for endurance paddling.
    • What to pack for the day- If you're touring, take some energy bars and definitely some sort of hydration bladder

I'm sure others will chime and share their personal experiences

all depends what you're getting into. in Hawai'i, we have everything from 7'0 surf boards to 14' downwind boards. I personally use an 8'2 (x 28-1/2 x 4) to surf in almost everything and a 12' gun for scary big days. for flatwater, rivers - in my opinion, I'd go inflatable and as big as you can manage, mainly because you don't want to fall in or flip and lose all your gear, and inflatable cause rocks. for accessories, lots of people use Surfco's EZ Plug kit which allows you to run bungee cords. my friend use to bungee a milk crate with a pole holder (+ gear) and go fishing off his 12' board.

Subbed. Anyone have any suggestions for a board for someone in the 260lb range?

I have used a hard board a few times and loved it. I bought an inflatable and I didn’t like the stability. Now my struggle is to find something stable to float me but not kill the bank account.

I’m on the “bulky” side at 215. I use a 10-6 board.... 33 wide.... 4.5 thick. Floats me just fine. It’s a Craigslist knockoff, but still a blast to ride.

See if you can find a starboard “avanti” model. They are 11ft long & 36” wide. I have 3 different starboard brand boards & one is this model. I use it mostly in the wintertime as my go to board cuz it’s tough to tip at that width.in New England the water is chilly in January. If you search for their website you can find the specs on it.

I think I may try this one out. My parents have a GoPlus iSUP and it's alright. Have you ever used one of the GoPlus boards?

I have not. Dont remember what rentals i have used but were both hard and inflatable. Just chose inflatable because they require less storage.

Yeah for as much as we get out, the inflatable is the way to go. If the ROC is as good as the GoPlus we'll be good to go I think.
    Thanks

good friend of mine was able to snag a custom long board from roy stuart when he lived in new zealand. it was a beautiful beast of a board but so much fun.

we used to paddle a lot in so cal. i had scored a slightly used carbon race board, 14' x 25". lots of open ocean paddles on that one. dana point harbor down to san clemente or up to laguna beach was a usual route. would load the camera into the housing and strap it on the board just in case. when we moved to solana beach, it was usually fletcher cove to swamis.

got a bec a 12'6" x 30ish x 3ish (wide, flat and stable) for cruising the harbor. we kept that one and have it in the garage. we'll take it up to brainard to make some laps on the lake. paddling fresh water at 10,000' is a bit different than open ocean cruising but still fun.

@csuviper looks like you went the inflatable route but if you ever get a more traditional board, don't let me catch you driving around with it on the roof nose forward... fins forward. always.

I'm going fins backward starting this weekend if i get the Inno Boardlockers i just picked up installed. They keep the straps raised so they should (in theory) let me slide my 9'6 in from behind and then just walk to the drivers side and cinch it down. Hoping for a sub 30-second load time

if leaning toward an inflatable NRS boards are about the best out there. Sure they're expensive compared to most but you get what you pay for! They will also do any sort of repairs if you ship it back, if your Amazon special needs repaired who you calling"?

Wife and I have been SUPers for three years now, too. It has become my favorite part of summer. Last Christmas, we bought our two kids each a board, too. They love theirs as much we do ours.

All four of our boards are inflatable. We have only ever manually inflated them. Every time people see us doing it, they stop and say it looks so hard lol. But really, it's not too bad. Even the kids can pretty well get theirs aired up. But, my wife and I's older pumps are starting to give out, so we just bought adapters to use with my portable compressor. Have not yet tried them to know how well they do.

I went with a free flow brand on Amazon. 6inch thickness seems to help with extra weight (two people, dog). It's definitely not the fastest or quick to deploy (ten minutes to inflate?) But cheap, and a fun summer activity.

Several years back, we picked up some beginner Body Glove inflatables from Costco's website. Inflatable SUP for $399. We couldn't pass that up. Out here by the Jersey Shore, we can only take advantage of the hottest months, so we didn't want to spend too much. My wife takes my 5 yr old on hers, and I take my 8 yr old on mine. They'd sit and we'd paddle. We love the convenience of being able to fold them up and store them away, either when enroute to the waterfront or when storing for the winter.

The newest 2020 model was just released. Take a look at the the review from famed GoPro reviewer, MicBergsma:
