05 tundra reg cab, 4.7 auto. for past few months been hard to come out of park and when out hard to move to reverse or drive. wont go into 2nd. and hard to go back into park, after drive around a bit everything frees up and works good. was thinking its just the cold weather. truck sat for a week, started up but wouldn't shift from park. put enuff pressure on gear lever that it snap the inside column. repaired it with jb weld. let it setup for 2 days and broke again. new shift column bracket on the way be here next week.

question is... what would cause this. when i get new column gonna try lube up the shift linkage underneath. would the neutral safety switch cause this, is there one on a auto trans. truck starts fine, hit the brake peddle and it pulls back the pin in the column perfect.

im at a loss, any advice to point me in the right direction would greatly be appreciated. tks geoff

That's common for that bracket to break. It broke on me, and I had to pull the whole steering column to fix it on my tailgate.

My shifter wasn't tight, or hard to shift like yours. I'd guess you'd need a new shift cable or to inspect the lever on the transmission.

    Where are you located geoff?

Your shift lever on the drivers side of the transmission might be crusty, and rusty.

The problem is caused by poor casting on the support bracket, which is discontinued, and the driver slamming the truck into park. Very common failure, I think I linked it in the “MEGATHREAD” (‘So you just bought a 1st Gen tundra…’.

You'll need a used assembly. Info on how to fix has its own thread on here: https://www.tundras.com/threads/shift-column-broke.80049/

User Jack McCarthy has a detailed thread on TundraSolutions showing the repair I believe. And I think it’s linked from that thread.

Stop manhandling your shift lever and make sure the linkage is not rusty (chances are it isn’t)

A little lube if needed and making sure you push the brake pedal down firm enough. Your neutral safety / brake switch could be going out as well. Yours almost sounds like the cable running to the transmission is gummed up.

There is also a little rod on the underside that rides on the brake pedal. If it is stuck it won’t release and keeps the shifter locked in park. I had to lube it and work it a few times until it smoothly released.

Ah I missed the part about it being temporary-repaired.

    Check this post: https://www.tundras.com/threads/shift-linkage.110934/#post-2862848

Actually, screw it, here, will save you the click:

When you get it, check the tail light fuse and the brake light pluger/switch at the pedal. Yes, I know that sounds stupid, but more than one generation of Tundra required the brake light switch plunge properly, and tail lights circuit to be OK (no dead lights) before it lets you shift the trans into/out of park. More info.

Of course, look to see if anything is binding cable-wise under the truck, with e-Brake on, of course, and also at the lever with the column plastics off.

Check this reply, since this issue has popped up a couple of times from others, and look at issues with broken levers if the above gets you no joy. For the first thread I linked in that reply, check @Jack McCarthy 's reply # 14 for how he fixed. But one of the two threads should hopefully help you out.

Some details on the column, parking lock, disassembly/reassembly from the FSM can be found in replies under this thread.

90% positive one of what I've offered will help. If it does, please reply back so others can benefit from your experience.

Ok so I just went out and blasted everything including the neutral safety switch. Unhook the shift cable from the trans and it was free moving with no effort at all. The lever on the trans still wouldn't move. So started giving light taps with hammer, back and forth and it started to move. Got it to point I could move it with my hand. Started the truck and I can shift gears from inside using the broken column piece. Still bit hard to go in park but I can manage it. What's everyone's take on this " neutral safety switch". Have one ordered should be here next week. Tia geoff

Yeah, I probably should've checked Amayama for parts also, ordering direct from Japan.
