Hey everyone! New here, I’ve previously just used this forum but never posted here. I’m having some trouble with my 08 Tundra. I dropped a driveshaft going down the road at about 75. No real damage minus some heat shields and the driveshaft obviously. I replaced the entire shaft and carrier bearing, and heard a loud clunking coming from the transfer case area when accelerating hard. It almost sounded like a chain slipping so I replaced the transfer case hoping that would fix it. Welp, I should’ve done more research and not jumped the gun because low and behold it still makes the same noise. Here’s what’s odd, it ONLY does it in drive. Not in reverse, not in neutral or park, just drive. And if you baby it and ease into it it never makes the noise, I got up to 55mph with 0 noise, as soon as I gave it some umph, the sound came back. It’s a very loud metal on metal clunking. Not a grinding or rubbing. Checked the motor mounts, trans mount/ transfer case mount and all are fine. Shaft, case , carrier and ujoints are all new, I’m at a loss. Any help or advice is always appreciated! Hopefully this post makes sense, sorry for rambling!

    That post was ramble worthwhile.

Interested in knowing the cause. My 2012 clunker every once in a while. Worried it may be the tranny.

Turns out it’s the yet again the transfer case. A chain is slipping causing the noise.

you can get a used one for around $700, I’m doing the install so I’m not sure about labor cost. Takes about 4hr to pull and swap the case
