After replacing upper control arms with SCP arms and ball joints, Fox coilovers, lower balljoints, new tierod ends, and new rack and pinion bushings, new rotors, new pads, new calipers, I STILL have a clunk in the steering wheel. When I am going over bumps I can feel a clunk in the steering wheel, and there is a small amount of play.

I had a similar issue on a silverado and it just needed a new intermediate steering shaft. Is there a similar part to that on these 1st gen Tundras? Where else should I look to resolve this?

Sorry, remind us: 2WD or 4WD? It's not in your profile info.

Have you checked the all the fasteners in the steering shaft? Specifically, the ones circled in yellow here, and the rusty ones you see in between (two on each side)?

Is the steering shaft seal (where the steering wheel passes thru the firewall, as seen in that last link) still good?

Try jacking up the front to get both wheels off the ground, start the engine, then have them run it lock to lock a few times while you watch for play under the hood?

Try the typical punching/jostling each front wheel while off the ground to look for play?

Have you confirmed the steering rack isn't lose, and its bushings aren't shot?

That one you quoted would explain clunk + slop.

But there was also this case which caused a jolt clunk in the steering wheel for a member recently: https://www.tundras.com/threads/help-identify-mystery-part-in-steering-wheel.107406/

The little metal counterweight piece in the steering wheel cage apparently came unglued?

But your mention of slop ... really points to something more like the reply of mine you quoted.

I forgot I also have the daystar body lift which has a 3" steering extension. I will check that as well, though not exactly sure where its located.

Small critical detail to leave out there.

Folks here will be able to help you a hell of a lot easier, without asking so many questions if you'll go here and spend a couple of minutes to do these two simple things:
    1. Fill out the "Vehicle One-Line Description:" field with your: Year, Cab type (AC/DC/RC/RCLB), Drivetrain (2WD/4WD) and Engine (V6/V8). Maintenance/upgrade/repair advice can vary wildly depending on those three details.
    2. Fill out the "Vehicle Modifications:" field with the major upgrades you've done to your truck. i.e. Daystar body lift, steer extension, wheel/tire, suspension, etc.
    Optional:
    • If you want to get rid of the "New Member" title under your name, fill in the "Custom Title:" field
    • If you want to save others from having to ask your general locale, list your state, your city, or your nearby three-letter airport code in the "Location:" field
I feel like this should be included in either the welcome email, or in the welcome Inbox message you get when you join. Or maybe it is, and I didn't read it just like everyone else :D

    But seriously. Fill that out.
