Just replaced my steering rack bushings with energy suspension poly bushings. Big thanks to everyone on here that posted about their experiences and the walkthroughs. Those were a huge help.

Just like I had expected it was as lovely as everyone said. The driver side bolt wasn't easy to break loose(I was under the front sideways with one foot on the sway bar and both hands on a breaker bar). However the passenger side bolt was seized and dug in like a tick. It took over a day of cranking, impact gun, penetrating oil, and finally a torch to get it out.

Of course the bushings were the same as well. Driver side was fairly easy and passenger side was a nightmare. In the pics you can see how oval the holes are in the passenger side are compared to the driver side.

So my question is what could've caused this?? Is there some other issue that I need to address or did that bolt maybe get loose at some point and filled with road grime/seize?

Driver side on left, passenger on right

On the 4Runner rack at least, the oval shape is from the factory.

I wish that were the case. I've seen pics of others guys stock bushings and both looked like my driver side ones. Could it be a tie rod issue?

Here's an image of a new steering rack:

You can see the oval bushing. This is a normal Toyota thing.

If you have the vehicle on the ground and you have someone move the steering wheel for you and you see the rack wiggling underneath the car, that indicates that the rack bushings are trashed. If you have over 100K on the rack, I would just toss in a new (OE) rack rather than swapping out the bushings. Whenever I have gone in to replace rack bushings at over 100K miles, I have found wet boots as well.

Wow I can't believe I didn't think to look at a picture of a stock replacement. Thank you!
