Crap. I was backing into my spot at work and the steering pump started making a grinding noise. Got really hard to turn the wheel. After messing with it more the grinding noise stopped but it is very hard to turn the steering wheel.
    :(:annoyed:

Could be the steering rack. That is a fairly common thing for lifted trucks.

To me from what I can tell your pump has failed. Hard to really hear it for sure... any play in the steering wheel than normal? If not bet is pump failure unless you had seal failure in the rack..

No play in the steering wheel. Everything was fine. Weekend camping trip to the mountains was fine. Trail was closed so no offroading. Drive in to work this morning was fine. Stop to back into my parking spot and it started making the grinding noise turning in reverse. Played with it some more and the grinding stopped. No noise and impossible to turn the wheel when not moving.

No need to tag me for help. :p

Here's some troubleshooting. Multiple symptoms will point to a common issue. See attached.

Looks like either low fluid or the pump is going out. Chilton says there's a warning light specifically for the power steering system and it can cause the truck to go into fail-safe (limp mode). I suspect that hasn't happened yet.

Here's the codes related to the power steering pressure sensor.

    Power Steering Warning Light Circuit
    DESCRIPTION
The power steering ECU is connected to the combination meter via CAN communication. If the power steering ECU detects a malfunction, the power steering warning light comes on. At this time, the vehicle enters fail-safe mode.

@LOTSOFTOYS took at look at my truck. So the fluid level on the outside of the reservoir looks like it was full because of a stain. It was actually completely drained into the steering boots.
The power steering pump is most likely ok. Will have to have the steering rack replaced. This is going to cost me some $$$.:annoyed:

@LOTSOFTOYS let me know of a place that sells re-manufactured racks. Its called rackdoctor.net.
Instead of $1,028 for the rack it will net me $387.95.
