Steering wheel does not returnn to center after turn. What's likely cause and what needs to be replaced?

Normally caused by an alignment issue. If you haven't messed with the front end inspect it for failed parts.

Make sure those ball joints are in good shape. Many snapped ball joint stories start with "I noticed a creak or the wheel not turning to center or I heard a pop"

About six months ago, while making a u turn from a stopped position, on a dirt road near my home I felt a sudden drop as if I had hit a large pothole. Turns out a ball joint had broken and with that the left front axle snapped. So, I had ball joints on both sides replaced along with the axle. I'm sure I need to replace the struts. They're still original! Still wondering if I need to replace any of the steering components.

We’ll have you spending thousands before you know it. Seriously, my 2002 received a front rebuild almost 2 years ago. It was much needed as she was real tired. Not sure about your 00 condition, but mine at 155k miles was saggy, sloppy, and squeaky.

Original Steering rack is still good with a small drip at the bellows.
