Hey there! Went in for my 40K service on 2023 Tundra platinum and they said needed new spark plugs or my emissions warranty will be voided. They quoted almost $1100. I called another repair shop and they said it takes 6 spark plugs and they cost $45 each ($270) and it's 1.5 hours labor. Total quote was $494. I know dealers are more but damn, am I missing something here? Thanks!

Note:located in Maryland so expect some stuff to be a bit more expensive.

I just took my truck in for service last week and they mentioned plugs and injector service but were very shady about it. I asked if they reused the plugs from the old engine before the swap and they said no so then why do I need to replace them they are new and they didn't have an answer other then it's calling it out on the computer. 780 for plugs 440 for injector service and 280 for brake fluid flush. I'm going to dive a bit more into it before paying them to do it.

Has anyone looked closely and found the plugs?
How difficult are they to get at?
    DIY job, or absolutely not?

Everything is a diy job with enough beer.

When I looked over the engine after the replacement it does appear you can get to most of them easily. There was one on the back that I wasn't sure exactly how much I'd have to remove to get access to it.

I DIY all of my own maintenance, hopefully providing receipts with mileage and dates will be sufficient to keep my extended warranty in good standing.

I think those of us who have done the spark plug replacements at 40-50K miles established that it's a joke.
    Mine looked new at 50K.

I watched a video on YouTube and the guy said only one was really tough to get to and of course some plastic and hoses have to be moved/removed.

You're probably right in that the plugs could go longer - the tough choice people have is follow the recommended interval at additional expense or risk warranty denial on a clogged catalytic converter because plugs weren't changed on time. Given the fuel content in some of the oil samples - that might be a legitimate concern.

DIY is pretty much a no go, I'm just not good with that stuff ... YouTube or not lol o_O

40K caught me off guard a bit too. My last Tundra wasn't like that. I do commute to DC and surrounding area a bit so maybe that plays a role?

Holy crap, I got my 20 done at the dealer and it was a little over $400, and thats the Canadian Peso. $1100 sounds a bit, whats the politically correct term, bend you over the service counter sans lube.

Perhaps you simply look like someone a shop identifies as a source of easy profit. Happens all the time with wife (get a burnt bulb replaced or get a failed inspection - of course all bulbs are fine) and mechanically virgin friends.

My father in laws POS Dodge Journey spark plugs are due every 50k kms, 30k miles, and thats a crappy, naturally aspirated 4 banger. A turbo V6, doesn't sound too unreasonable

$1100 is absolutely RIDICULOUS. And the other shop with the $45 spark plugs is RIDICULOUS. The time is good though. DENSO 3523 spark plugs are MUCH cheaper than that. Rockauto has them for 13.69 a piece

My daughter's Corolla was quoted 400.00. I looked over at her and asked her if she wanted to save 348.00. She said it was the easiest thing ever.

    1100.00....damn.

Not bad really. Some are 20k if lucky.
