Spare FOB Replacement Question

Hello Tundra brothers and sisters,

I'm feeling kinda dumb for a couple of reasons this morning.

First, my clever idea to hide my spare FOB in a waterproof magnetic box under my truck wasn't so clever. It's gone. Second, I can't seem to find a replacement FOB on any of the official Toyota online parts stores. I've tried all the search terms I can think of, but nada. I have found them on eBay and other non-Toyota retailers, but I'm leery of those sources.

Is Toyota still playing catch up on the second FOBs on new purchases? Am I looking at another 12 month wait to get a spare?

Should I just call my dealership to order one? I understand it will have to be programmed, anyway. If so, do any of you know how much a new FOB and programming will cost?

Matt. When i picked up my truck it only came with 1 FOB. After 2 months of waiting I just bought a OEM FOB online and had them program it. Mind you I did have the KEY for a second FOB that they gave me for it so all I bought was the FOB.

I recall someone mentioning the dealerships charge north of $350 for a new FOB. One of your links seems to confirm that. How are these sources charging so much less?

Did you order your second FOB from one of those sources, then have the dealership program it? I lost both the FOB and physical key. I assume the new physical key will have to be cut (or whatever they do to it), as well?

I'm just trying to figure out the easiest and cheapest route to take care of this. For some silly reason all Colorado car dealerships are closed on Sundays, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to make a call to my preferred dealership.

hey Matt. Sorry for the delay, been out of the house today. As to where I ordered from I can't remember. I just got tired of waiting for the Toyota Dealer to get the second FOB Plus was planning a vacation at the time. I got online and look for OEM 2022-2024 Key FOB and ordered. Think I spent somewhere around 150.00 to 200.00 for one. Seemed odd to me that Toyota was making me wait 6 months for a second FOB and I could buy OEM online and get it in a week. After I got the FOB I went back to the Toyota dealer and basically told them to keep the one Toyota was going to send and could they program the FOB I ordered online for no charge which they were kind enough to do.

I'm going to call my dealership tomorrow morning, and see what they want to ding me for the new FOB and programming. Unfortunately, they are over an hour away. But I have to do the tail light recall, anyway, so I can combine both issues into one trip.

I miss the good old days when you could go to your local hardware store to get a spare car key made for a few bucks.

 

Hey Matt. Sounds like a plan. Maybe if you talk nice to them you can get them to program a FOB as a courtesy if you bought the truck from them. Forgot to say I don't recall who I bought the FOB from. It was just a online site the look legit. Had no problems getting it and so on. As to your old days thought. I'm with you there. You know I would be willing to pay an extra 1000.00 on a new truck for the option of no Nanny controls. regular key. and so on. Don't get me wrong a lot of the tech is nice when it all works according to the brochure but can be a "real pain in the ass when something goes south".
Just a thought get a new fob, put it in sleep mode, hide it in the truck and then hide the emergency key somewhere. No sure but suspect might be cheaper to replace as apposed to the FOB itself if you loose it. take care and best of luck.

 

We're made from the same mold, brother. All of the new tech on trucks is both a blessing and a curse. I'm leaning towards the latter.

The problem with putting the spare FOB in the truck, and hiding the emergency key somewhere is the e-key still needs to be hidden and attached to the outside of the truck. Otherwise a lossed FOB turns into a fiasco.

 

Heads up, the reverse light recall roll out starts sometime 4th quarter.

 

I'm not familiar the "plate light recall".

The open recall I have is for the tail lights reverse lamps. Safety recall 25TA06

No worries. Those reverse lamps are more like plate lights, anyway. Thanks for the heads up about the 4th quarter roll out. I had missed that.

 

So I called my local dealership. They wanted $350 for a new FOB and physical key, and that doesn't include programming labor fees. I said no thanks. Then I asked for the part numbers.

I found the same parts at Ourisman Toyota online for $182, including shipping. That savings is worth the short wait to me.

My dealership said programming the FOB and cutting the physical key will cost $180. I'm going to shop that price thru a few locksmiths.

 

That price is consistent with the quote I got from my dealer. I ended up going with a mobile locksmith who originally quoted $500 (vs the 600 something that the dealer wanted) and then they had so much trouble programming it that he wanted to charge me $1500 for the new key… apparently the rolling FCC codes for these fobs are problematic/difficult. I told him I’d pay him $550 and he wouldn’t be hearing from a lawyer, which he accepted lol.

 

Gunna need a dealer to actually program the fob, lock smith might be able to cut the metal but in the long run cheaper to have the dealer do everything as mentioned with the fcc codes.

just an fyi if you tape or try to hide a fob in a magnetic box that’s super easy to pick up the signal with the right device and steal the truck. Bad idea imo.

 

Thanks. I called a few of the closest locksmiths, but only got answering service people who barely spoke English. Upon giving them my location, I was informed I was out of their service area. So, when my new FOB arrives, I guess it's another trip to the dealership.

Yeah, hiding my spare FOB under my truck was a bad and expensive mistake all the way around. Thanks for the heads up about the signal reading device.

Am I the only one who misses the days of using an actual key to start my truck?

 

Oh man, I'm such an idiot. I just realized I only hid the physical key under my truck. My spare FOB is lying in the bottom of my center console, still in the little zip-lock baggie that it came in. Turned off, of course.

Fortunately, I was able to cancel my order for the new FOB. So, now I only have to get the new physical key cut, when it arrives.

Don't mind me, I'm just a blabbering old man with a failing memory, apparently.

 

For me, carrying the fob is not much different than carrying a key. Game changer was the card fob in/on the wallet. Going back to carry a fob or key is not a option.

 

This whole fiasco has made me wonder what you guys do with your spare FOB and physical key when you travel in your truck.

My thinking was hiding my spare physical key under the truck, with my spare FOB in the cab, would be the best option in case I lost my every day FOB. I'd just reach under the truck, grab the spare physical key to open the truck door, then turn on my spare FOB to start the truck...off and running with no calls to a locksmith, or my wife, or any other inconveniences and delays.

What do y'all do?

 

Never lost a fob or even considered it honestly, stays in my pocket. When I do hunting and backpack trips out west I take the spare fob and it’s in a sealed bag in my pack out bag.

hunting on the east coast fob goes directly in my bino harness. Everyday not hunting it’s in my right pocket, spare is at the house.

don’t really need the metal key either with the app to unlock the doors. Could possibly disable the fob, then feradyne bag and lock it in the bed. Access from the tonneau or unlock the bed with the app.

I’ve never left a fob in any Toyota since they are so easy to steal though.

 

Thanks. I'm just an old country boy hunter who lives in an area where the possibility of having my truck stolen isn't even on my radar. I routinely leave my truck unlocked with the FOB in it when running errands in town...sometimes I even leave my truck running, when it's hot out, to keep it cool.

But I realize my bubble is different when I travel. Sadly.
