In trying to fine tune travel, Ive measured and done everything in my tool box. I would like to know that I am bottoming out suspension, before topping out the shocks. (I want bump stops to take the hit before the Kings) I may be there, but I can't tell on hard hits. So, I plan to put a zip tie on the shock shafts, and see where it lands. But, the Kings have a conical bottom, and the internals may top out first on up travel. So, my question is, does anyone know what a 2.5 oem King looks like at full compression? Where the body falls into the bottom cup? I can see oil lines on the shaft - seem right. Cant' see any shock body evidence marks as hitting the low cup, but I would love to know what a fully compressed perf OEM looks like. I can't see the internals, so its why i'm asking if anyone knows.

    Best thing to do is....

    1. Not overthink it if it's an OE replacement shock.

    2. Pull the coil and install the shock only, compress and boom

I agree 100 percent. If I could pull the spring on the coilover I would. I'm going off King specs with the whole assembly pulled, suspention compressed to my ability and measurements. Im trying to handle in house, my house. But ,I would love to see a fully compressed 2.5 king without the spring. I overthink everything :)

This is how I set mine up. Pulled springs, dumped N2, and at full bump stop I had around 1/4” left in shock travel.

Did the same with limit straps, and test a couple times per year and adjust.

Thanks @ColoradoTJ very much. I guess you are telling me to do it right. I think I'm at about 1/4 myself. All trucks are different. Rather than think it, I'll prove it and pull the springs. Shop or my own legit spring compressor? I'll have to think about that one...

Do it yourself. It’s pretty easy. Spring removal on a single stage shock will need a few cranks of a spring compressor, but nothing more.

I have seen shocks exploded from bottoming out. Top cap and shock body gone.

Thanks again @ColoradoTJ. I have the tools to adjust the collar, I'll youtube the spring removal. May not need the compressor if all of the pre-load is gone. Or maybe I will :)

On a new spring maybe. Since you have the tools...good to go.

Like ColoradoTJ said, with the collar all the way up you shouldn't need much compression on the spring to pull it. Another thing you could do is pull the shock off the top hat, raise the A arm until it compresses bumps and then see what the eyelet to eyelet distance is and how that compares to kings specs for compressed length, but pulling the spring would be the best imo.

Also keep in mind your rubber bump stop will compress a lot more on a harder hit than just supporting the trucks weight.

    Here is a fine example.

Start at 4:30 (unless you want to watch it) We wheel this trail a lot.

So I just watched that video in its entirety. WTF, you guys do that? Holy balls. We are in different worlds, but I'm kinda pumped. I don't even know what those trucks are, to be honest. I thought Jeep frame, saw a Chevy CAD logo. IDK. But, Ive watched some manufacturer vids of those shocks. I wish I was working with those. Needless to say, I think you know what you are talking about. Thank you. EA

This isn’t the toughest trail we do.

Check out Ten Falls in Gypsum Colorado. Now that’s nuts. Boulder Canyon in Montrose Colorado is a close second.
