Does such a thing exist? I run 35 Mud tires on my tundra. Last year I was caught in a snow storm and made it safe down with out them(tundra is 4x4) Some one was telling me I need them. But I’m not sure if they even make them for the mud tires.

Bump, cuz I need this. Driving Seattle to Cape Cod to DC and back, which will include I-94 through the Northern Plains States and I-90 back. Cross the Rockies twice. Can’t imagine a better way to enjoy my first ever truck, 17 Platinum, by driving over 6k miles for Xmas!

Do you have clearance for chains with 35's?

    Custom tire chains are available.

Chains will work on any tire. They’re just harder to get on and tight sometimes with heavy shoulder lugs. V-bar chains give you the best reaction and are the most expensive. I have cam lock chains and carry extra tightening bands for them. Loose tire chains can cause a lot of damage.

Tread pattern doesn't matter, just get chains for 35s. Make sure you know how to put them on and get them snug otherwise they'll rip your body apart.

No personal experience, but I understand they work very well on snow and ice covered highways. Easier to get on and very good traction.

However, they aren't fit for the purpose of getting down a forestry road after an unexpected snowfall. Chains are more reliable and stronger when the underlying surface is not pavement.

That would make sense. I could see them working fine in the highway but I can’t see how they would afford better traction when you have snow on top of ice, etc.

If you have a local Les Schwab they will carry chains and socks(don’t know if socks go to 35’s though) I had chains for my last 35’s. If you don’t use them return them in the spring and get your money back. You need to carry them for different passes to be legal.

I have. They work great on hardpack and ice.

They are not for off-road use. They will get tore up as it's made of textile.

Thanks, I’ll head to LS soon for the alignment and rotation anyway, so I’ll see what they say.

I can't imagine being able to fit 35's on my truck with enough clearance to also run chains... how much lift are you running?

    This, a lot of this.

I went up to Shaver Lake for Christmas right after a storm a few years back. I had never driven in snow before but I picked up chains on the way up. I work on my truck all the time so how hard can rolling the chains in front of my tires, driving onto them, then clipping them on be?

I was repeating that to myself in a very pissed off manner on the side of the road in 32 degree wind, in mud. I couldn't get them adjusted tight enough and when I started driving they were slapping my fender where the mud flaps used to be.

Lucky for me I wasn't far from the cabin, once I got in beer never tasted better. The next day with the help of sunlight and pavement I had a different technique. I popped the jack under my tire and got it off the ground, then wrapped the chain tight and did the same on the other side. That fixed the fender slapping.

I'm sure with some practice I could get the drive on method down, but in the dark, in the mud, and in the cold wind, it wasn't happening.

I’m sure they will deteriorate over time, all plastic and elastic does.
Can’t imagine they would hold up more than a few minutes once you’re on pavement ( or rocks, for that matter), and frequently the snow and ice is intermittent with bare patches, depending on sun sun and shade.
Might be handy as a back up, but I prefer real chains.

You can get chains on without driving on or using a jack. Drape them over the top, fasten the back, and then hook the front. You'll have to use both the cam locks and snubbers, or two sets of snubbers probably, but if you're stuck you can still get them on.

I agree absolutely, If there’s any chance at all I will need to put them on, I keep my light weight floor jack in the truck

Of course you can, that’s the regular way. But a jack makes life easier!

    This,
I have put chains on my truck and Type 1 fire engines (big) using this method, no need to jack up the truck. If your soil is anything like ours out here in CO, the only good chain is the v bar, and even then, these get built up with clay quick.

They hold up. I had regular use on a set that went on my subaru. I used them for 4 winter seasons up in the eastern sierras. No issues. I left them with the car when I sold it. They're in FL now, so I doubt they'll get anymore use.

I tried that method and couldn't get them hooked on both sides. It was just short of connecting, might have just been diagonally misaligned for all I know but I wouldn't doubt I made a rookie mistake.

My chains are the heavy real chain style, my brother in law got the ones that look like bungee cords for his suv, I was able to put those on his car real easily.

Could be you had the inside link hooked too tight. It's easy to do, and you have to leave the inside a little looser than you think you should. Once it's hooked, then you can grab the front and give it a few really good yanks to get the play out. This is where MT tires are a pain. The shoulder lugs make it hard to get the chain tight.

Sometimes you have to lock the outside hook in, give it a few good yanks and then snug it up again. Close your cams and/or add your snubbers.

Thats exactly what I did. I had Mickey Thompson tires with huge square lugs and the chains were hooking on the corners to make it harder.
