I have a regular bed cap/camper but for something like this I know 4wheelcampers has some pretty badass ones. They come at a STEEP price though

It’s made by BelAir/ USA Campers in SoCal. I guess USA campers makes them for BelAir

What kind of amenities do you want? When you say Baja, I'm assuming just exploring low speed right?

Yep… low speed exploring. I have most things needed…. Portable stove, water containers, etc. Just want to set it up simple for 7-10 days.

Well that sound like you will be livin the best life!! Sounds fun.

I'm sure you have seen what slide in campers or GoFast campers have done to Tacoma's and Tundra truck beds. I would take that into consideration when purchasing.

Have you considered a camping off-road trailer? Set it up once for the duration and come back every day?

I have been thinking something like GoFast. I see them down in Baja often…..might give them a closer look. We just got back from zigzagging Baja, 7 days…1800 miles round trip. You see just about every setup you can think of down there :)

Why not a trailer, trailer with basic shell on truck, trailer with shell, or even trailer and soft topper on truck, trailer, or both? Just curious.

IMG_5250.jpg Here’s my current setup. I would just like something with a little more headroom for when the weather is bad. A small trailer would be nice. But exploring can get a little tricky at times.

Found them!! Bel Air Camper shells. Seem expensive but their prices are all very similar for every model. I've got an
8' Tundra RC. This would make a wicked base for travelling/camping.

Aluminum camper shell companies such as ARE will build you a commercial custom high rise lightweight basic shell. From there, you can add windoors, side cabinets, full rear doors, roof vent/fan, etc. Then sell your current fiberglass to recover some of the cost. Mighty look at what @Wallygator has on his truck.

The trick with all these ‘custom’ manufacturers is trying to keep the costs down to rationale level. I far more understand low cost rough camping more than high end luxury Overlanding extravagance.

Someone has got to keep the hamster wheels spinning or else we'll all be extra rough camping.

Have you considered a rack with a RTT? All this camping stuff seems to be priced way out of my budget. You can purchase used RV, trailer for the same price or less for some of these setups. I was looking into aluminum trays, until I saw the prices. Some were upwards of US$14K. Crazy!

I’ve looked at RTTs. Not really the way I would like to go. This setup would be for just simple guys trips and still be able to use my truck as a truck since it’s my daily. I do like the contractor truck shell idea. Need to look into the options available.

Search ARE WEDGE DCU, lots of images there. One big advantage is you have good resale value with what you currently have and what you would be getting. Good luck!

    That's bad because??
To stay on track, the aluminum ARE truck shells are really nice and lightweight. Lighter in weight than the same size fiberglass version
and as stated above they retain their value far better. Aluminum is cold, so it would require insulation and vapour barrier for sure in
colder climates. Fiberglass needs a spray attached inner insulation as well, it's just a bit easier to do and a bit cheaper. Either way
drippy ceilings in cold weather suck! Ventilation is your friend always.
I have used Maggiolina Extreme roof tent for almost 10 yrs, on my second New one now. Started second hand just to see. Many
advantages with good quality roof tent ( iKamper, Tepui, Autohome ) is your sleeping area is isolated from all your other gear.
Security in a roof tent is nice, 4 and 2 legged critters. I secure my ladder to my tent at night if I have worries about it walking off.
My Tundra is a farm truck, I camp in a Land Cruiser so that's why my opinion. I am looking at comfort of camper shell or similar for the
    Tundra, i'm getting older.

Thanks for the post. Bought two 5.5' dual door on top of rail bed boxes that will begin to form my DIY camper and I have been debating the mounting orientation pros and cons. I like how this guy has the door open up and a table that then folds down. I hadn't seen or thought about that solution yet. Good stuff!

Check the second to last page with the single cab Tacoma. Exactly the setup I want eventually.
