So I got an interesting call from the dealership yesterday. They want to buy my truck which would leave me with about $7K upside.

Is the 2020 and equity worth it? Or should I stick with my 2018 and drive it until it dies. I have a crewmax but would be getting a DC bc I need the bed space.

just looking for thoughts as I have never been in this situation where my truck had so much equity

The 2020 is really nice with the new screen Apple car play and the push button start and entry with smart key. Also the Toyota app is great with being able to lock, unlock, and start the car from your phone. I also love not having to take antenna off every time I drive through a car wash

Do you tow, haul or off-road? No transmission cooler on the 2020s.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the redesign is coming in 2022.

i don’t tow much but I haul a lot of gear and the lack of transmission cooler definitely has me nervous. I am going to look at trucks this weekend and I’m going to ask if they will install one for me. If not I will probably wait

    Few things to consider.

Redesign is 2022, but everyone’s saying it won’t have the V8

2020 has a lot of nice creature comforts that 2018 didn’t; push button start, keyless entry, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, remote start. The transmission cooler could be an issue if you tow/haul a lot

If you want all the cool tech features, aren’t concerned with the trans cooler, and want a V8, then I would say go for it if you get a good deal

the plan all along was to wait for the redesign but the prices they offered to purchase my truck was crazy.

That’s the part that is interesting to me, I want all of those items but the weight and hills I drive everyday (100miles) I’m concerned about the transmission cooler

I’ve listened to interviews with Toyota peeps who said they engineered the system to not require the cooler, but not sure how that decision has played out in real life. Maybe someone who tows with a transmission cooler-less tundra can chime in on that.

Toyota has decided that they are dollars ahead by not adding the transmission cooler and paying for the warranty work on those few transmissions that were used for towing heavy trailers. You can buy an aftermarket ATF cooler for $200 and then get the dealer to agree to add it for no charge.

I sold my pickup a couple of weeks ago as there was no point having it sitting at the house with the ongoing pandemic that is likely to last in the USA until late in 2021 (even with the oaf out of the oval office the horse left the barn months ago). With the 2022 trucks roughly a 12 months away it seems more sensible to wait on buying a new truck unless the one you have bites the dust.

I have a 2020 and have towed plenty, both in terms of weight and frequency. No issues.
To me this is a bunch of internet hype that hasn’t yet amounted to anything. We’ll all see, but I wouldn’t worry about it.

I guess those things are nice but I have no need for them and I NEVER take my truck through a car wash.

Your temp in a 2018 on your transmission unloaded will be 20-30 degrees cooler than the new truck on a normal basis. Towing can be 50 degrees hotter. Tundras are over engineered, so yes that might be ok for some. At one time I thought of selling my 2019 and buying a 2018. My current plan is to put a cooler on my truck. If you don’t keep your vehicles for 10 years like I do go for it. It will still be a fantastic truck. I think a 2018 would hold its value better in the long run to those who want a Tundra.

May want to check Carvana. Yesterday they offered me $1k less than I bought it new for 5 and a half years ago. They’re picking it up Sunday.

Not all 2020 models are push button start. Not alot of changes to the 2021 either. They are on toyota.com now.

Will do. I can’t seem to pass it up. 2015 with 37K miles and I only lose a grand. I’ll take that any day. Especially since it’s a garage queen.

Yeah I found a 2020 Double Cab SX 2wd for an internet price of 33,786. Dealer said I will also get the military, Costco, and True car discounts. He will send me a quote sheet in the morning. My 2013 DC is a 4.6. Carvanas latest offer for it stock with 97K miles is $17,800.

Is your current 4.6 a 2wd also? That seems like a great offer!

Appreciate all the advice. I am typically the type of person that drives a vehicle until it dies, but $7K over what I owe is a lot so it just got me thinking. I am going to look at two double cabs this weekend so we will see how it goes!

If it is almost paid for why jump on a new payment for a few additional technological items added. I say run what you brung and call it a day. Save the funds towards other things.

Get a quote from Carvana. You might get a couple of thousands more in selling it out right. I got offered 4k more with my 2020 with 18,502 miles compared to other dealerships.

As for towing, heavy loads and daily miles. I never had any issues with all of them. Even with the lift and taller tires. 18K in 9 months with max payload 7 days a week plus occasional towing 200 to 900 miles.

Agreed. Those revolving brissle padded rollers in combination with the heavy detergents they use are unforgiving to paint, and or lacquer finish. The last time I went through one the air blast at the end of the wash blew up my wipers and nearly ripped em off the truck...never again.

So I ended up trading in the 2018 for the 2020. The cash in pocket was too good to pass up. I still had a few years left before I paid it off so I am taking the cash. I pick her up today. Going with a double cab SR5. The bigger bed will definitely be better for my needs.

I appreciate everyones input. Now lets hope my transmission doesn't fry without a cooler!!
